<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="ES-MX">Por Judy Goldman</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div class="MsoNormal">
hijos. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Me divierte
</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="ES-MX">Esto generalmente produce niños reacios a
casa.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div class="MsoNormal">
</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="entry">
<span style="font-size: 14px;"><i><span style="font-family: "verdana" , "geneva" , sans-serif;">L</span><i style="font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">a escritora <a href="http://www.mariadelourdesvictoria.com/">María Victoria </a>ha
</i></i></span>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: 14px;">"María, quítale los mexicanismos a tu
<br />
A esas horas
Mis
no entendí. ¿Qué querría decir? ¿Que hiciera yo qué???</span>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Quizás a Bolivia. O quizás, por pura venganza, a
Barcelona.</span>
<br />
<span style="font-size: 14px;">Le escribí a mi agente pidiendo una aclaración. La respuesta no se hizo esperar:<br />
“…la novela no debe sonar tan mexicana. ¿Me explico?
<br />
<span style="font-size: 14px;">Desconcierto.</span>
<br />
<span style="font-size: 14px;">Lo confieso. La desconcertada con
semejante respuesta fui yo.
<br />
voluntad</i>”.</span>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

</span><br />
<span style="color: blue;">Se llama Leylha Ahuile.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: blue;"><span><em><strong>La cometa (LC): Leylha, antes
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: blue;">
</span></span><span style="font-size: small;">
empresa, PromoLatino.</span></span></span>
<br />

<br />
After a few months or much activity, trips, and life and its pleasures and difficulties, I come back to my blog and one of my intentions is to feed it more frecuently.<br />
This is why I'm sharing an interview that was published in number 39 of La cometa, the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) electronic bulletin in Spanish. It comes out every four months and is the collaborative work of Malena F. Alzú, various people who contribute articles and opinion pieces, and myself.<br />
The interview is of a very active woman focused on the promotion of books of Latino interest, among them those for young readers, either in Spanish or bilingual.<br />
Her name is Leylha Ahuile.<br />

<span style="color: #351c75;">The SCBWI, the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, has come up with a fabulous way of doing a virtual book launch through its webpage. Yesterday I uploaded the information of one of my new books. It's called Kopecks for Blintzes, it was ilustratged by Susan Batori, and published by Kar-Ben, part of the Lerner Publications Group. Come by and stay a while in my party! You can find it at http://www.scbwi.org/display-book-launch-party/?id=370155 and give it a like if you like it. The book will be on sale as of January 1 in the publishers's website. You can also visit the other book launch parties while you're at it. Christmas is right around the corner and a book (or several!) is the best gift.</span>Judy Goldmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10703645086899827776noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2695167120061557198.post-26735334170458339942015-10-07T18:11:00.002-07:002015-10-07T18:11:34.501-07:00La Universidad Iberoamericana lanza su revista electrónica dedicada al estudio de la literatura infantil y juvenil contemporanea/ The Universidad Iberoamericana releases its electronic bulletin dedicated to the study of contemporary books for young readers<span style="color: blue;">La Universidad Iberoamericana lanza su revista electrónica dedicada a la literatura infantil y juvenil. tema de la censura de los libros para niños y jóvenes es, sin duda, polémico.
</span></div>
<span style="color: #134f5c;">
</span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-indent: 0cm;">
<span style="color: #134f5c;">
</span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-indent: 0cm;">
<span style="color: #134f5c;">
</span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-indent: 0cm;">
asisten a esa escuela.

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-indent: 0cm;">
Algunas denuncias no

Estados Unidos están <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">La bella durmiente</i>
puede agregar <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Blanca Nieves</i> (por

<span style="color: blue;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Censorship is, indeed, a
controversial theme. Should or shouldn't a book be prohibited? In that case,

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-indent: 0cm;">
<span style="color: blue;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>When speaking about books for young readers there are,
generally, two sides. One rejects it completely, because it believes that kids
and young adults should be exposed to a great variety of information which will
teach them to be open, imaginative, respectful, and critical, and another that
is in favor of it because it thinks that kids, no matter what their age, have
to be protected from, according to their particular criteria, the
"bad" things in life.</span></span></div>
<span style="color: blue;">
</span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-indent: 0cm;">
<span style="color: blue;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>In the US, where there are many documented complaints and
cases (which is different from what happens in Mexico), censorship of kid's
books can come from any position in a varied political and social spectrum but
generally they are from either the extreme right, where anything that is
perceived as being against religious or moral values has to be removed or
prohibited; or from liberal left wing groups who wish to remove or limit access
to books with racial and sexual stereotypes that keep intolerance alive but in
an unequivocal way,
with no explanations and, occasionally, without taking into consideration the
social reality that, though it cannot be justified, was present in the time
when many of the books now considered classics were written and published. This
is, for instance, what happens with <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn</i>, by Mark Twain, one of the most attacked
books in history because of the way black people are portrayed in it.</span></span></div>
<span style="color: blue;">
</span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-indent: 0cm;">
<span style="color: blue;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>In the USA there are books that have been removed from
school libraries and placed in restricted access shelves where only those who
have permission from their parents or guardians can read them. There are groups
of parents who, wishing to involve themselves directly in their children's
education, feel that they have a right to decide what reading matter is good
for <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">all </i>the kids in a school. Some
parents look to prohibit the reading of a book because they feel that exposing
a child or adolescent to a disturbing behavior that will give the reader
permission to do the same. On the other hand, those who oppose censorship
believe that young readers can determine, on their own, if the behavior they
find in a book should or shouldn't be copied. These adults believe that
youngsters must learn to make their own decisions based on the values taught to
them by their parents and, also, that censorship limits intellectual freedom.
What is most important is that no group or individual has the right to impose
his or her moral or literary standards on others who think differently. </span></span></div>
<span style="color: blue;">
</span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-indent: 0cm;">
<span style="color: blue;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>Prohibiting a book with stereotypes will not solve the
problem of intolerance: it is best to read it to detect and speak openly about
them. Prohibiting, hiding, or limiting the reading of a book attempts against
the free flow of ideas and, though there are books that can be terrible because
of their content, it's preferable that they shouldn't circulate clandestinely since
the damage they can cause will, most probably, be worse.</span></span></div>
<span style="color: blue;">
</span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-indent: 0cm;">
<span style="color: blue;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>The complaints and reasons for prohibiting a book are
diverse and range from the absurd to those that appear just and reasonable.
Some reports have not prospered. Others have managed to restrict free access to
books that a minority consider not appropriate for innocent and pliable minds.
In what refers to contemporary novels for young adults (YA), where subjects
like sexual relationships and drug and alcohol addiction are treated, some adults
try to prohibit them as they believe that reading them gives adolescents
permission to turn into "immoral" persons without taking into
consideration that, in these books, they can perhaps find solutions and/or
answers to similar situations that they are experiencing in real life. </span></span></div>
<span style="color: blue;">
</span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-indent: 0cm;">
<span style="color: blue;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>Among the many books (and stories) that have been
attacked in the USA are <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Sleeping Beauty</i>
(for being violent), <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Where's Wally? </i>(for
including a woman's naked breast), and <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The
Witches</i>, by Roald Dahl (for inciting kids to practice witchcraft). In a
school, a group went to the extreme of demanding that a librarian draw
underpants on the naked little boy who appears in Maurice Sendak's <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">In the Night Kitchen </i>and, in another
school that blankets be drawn on the illustrations of some nude babies. You can
also add to the list <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Snow White</i> (for
it being immoral because the princess lives with seven dwarfs), and the Harry
Potter saga, which has created millions of readers, for steering children
towards practicing Satanism and witchcraft. There are also books that have been
prohibited because they talk about homosexuality. One of them is <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">And Tango Makes Three</i>, by Justin
Richardson and Peter Parnell and illustrated by Henry Cole. The book tells how
a pair of male penguins hatch an egg and, when Tango is born, form a family.
The right attacked ––and continues to attack–– the book because it has a
homosexual theme.*</span></span></div>
<span style="color: blue;">
</span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-indent: 0cm;">
<span style="color: blue;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>There will always be people who will find something
offensive in what they read and it's almost impossible to find a book that
everyone likes. So the next question is if it's better to produce only sterile
and rose-colored literature where you try to please everyone? There is nothing
wrong with letting the smallest ones read this type of books: in fact, it's
recommendable since a happy ending gives them security and tranquility. But, as
they grow and mature, should they be left in ignorance about true life themes
or is it more convenient to open their eyes since, in reading about them, they
can find possible solutions to problems and similar situations? And, more
importantly, who has the right to selected and censor? Within a family, only
the parents have that right while their children are minors. But, who has the
right to impose their values and tastes on the rest of the people with whom
they are in contact? In school, should the heads of school and teachers select
reading materials according to their tastes and their knowledge of the students
or according to standards and/or educational criteria or according to what
parents demand? Does the school or group of parents have a right to force their
choices inside and outside of the institution? Parents have the responsibility
of guiding only their children. When they find material that presents
stereotypes, isn't it better to talk about them to show that they are wrong in
order for them not to be repeated? Teachers can, also, take advantage and talk
about them openly. When responding, take into consideration that the line
between selecting and censoring is very fine. </span></span></div>
<span style="color: blue;">
</span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-indent: 0cm;">
<span style="color: blue;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>With this, it is to be hoped that young readers will
become individuals who think and are creative, imaginative and judicious and
not the opposite: passive people who receive everything without questioning
anything. </span></span></div>

</span><br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #990000;">It's summer and kids are on vacations. Parents are looking for some options so that their children are not connected, hour after hour, to the TV or spending all day playing video games. It's not that they shouldn't see the TV or play videogames but there are other options of entertainment and one of them is reading. It can be silent or out loud since a book read to the whole family is an excellent way to tighten family bonds besides having a fun, thrilling time. There are several ways to get books since you can go to a bookstore or a library. Once there, carefully select a book or more, since parents are the one who know their kids better than anyone else, and also take into consideration their age. There are books for every stage and this means that a young child can enjoy a book for kids a little bit older and teenagers can be delighted with a picture book.</span><br />
<span style="color: #990000;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #990000;">Look for books ––novels, stories, poetry and nonfiction–– by Mexican authors such as Mónica B. Brozon, María Baranda, Christel Guczka, Gabriela Olmos, Javier

Andrés Acosta, Raquel Castro, Antonio Ramos Revilla, Martha Riva Palacio

<span style="color: magenta;">Today is the celebration of the international children's books day in honor of Hans Christian Andersen, author of stories such as The Little Mermaid and The Ugly Duckling. I cofess that these two stories, as well as The Emperor's New Clothes, where some of my favorites as a child but others scared me or made me sad. In those long ago day, when Andersen penned the stories, there were no concessions and talking to children about death and violence was normal. In The Little Mermaid she ends her life as foam and, in The Tin Soldier, the soldier dies. I was saddened by this. Besides, as a child, I tried to read some of his stories and was very frightened when, for instance, a witch had her head cut off and the blood flowed. Even so, I appreciate his tales and they were a big part of my life. So, celebrate in a big way and give an author or an illustrator a big hug. </span>Judy Goldmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10703645086899827776noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2695167120061557198.post-85845792194159302014-03-17T12:06:00.000-07:002014-03-17T12:35:27.058-07:00Feria del libro de Bolonia/Bologna Book Fair.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div class="MsoNormal">
hijos. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Me divierte
</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="ES-MX">Esto generalmente produce niños reacios a
casa.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div class="MsoNormal">

explicarán qué exactamente está acompañándolo <i>En la oscuridad</i>.

L. Travers (Pamela Lyndon Travers) and the first published in 1934, were some of my favorites when I was a little girl. I read them time after time and enjoyed them tremendously. I wanted to have a nanny just like her! She was so no nonsense on the outside but, oh my, what wonderful adventures she had with the Banks children and all those great characters who surrounded her. Recently, when I was in New York, I had a delighful time at the wonderful "The ABC of It" exhibition at the New York Public Library and was thrilled to see P.L. Traver's parrot-head umbrella, exactly like the one that Mary Poppins uses, as well as some of the original illustrations for the books by Mary Shepard and a doll that served as a model for that perfect nanny. I think that this rainy afternoon will be a good time to read one of those books again!<br />

<span style="color: #b45f06;">I just got back from New York and had the chance to see the marvelous exhibit of children's books at the NY Public Library. I also loved the fact that I saw many of the books that I read as a child and which continue to be favorites to this day. If you have the chance to, go and visit it because, besides seeing the books, the way they are exhibiteid is fascinating. I'll upload some more photos later on but, in the meantime, here I am standing inside the silhouette of Max, from Where the WIld Things Are and which, on the other side, is covered in fake fur. There are also books like Mary Poppins (plus P.L. Traver's parrot-headed umbrella), The Secret Garden, The Phantom Tollbooth, comics, antique books, a selection of banned books (in the US), and a huge etcetera. It's well worth it to spend two or three hours there, surrounded by colors, letters, and good friends.</span><br />

Five animated, traditional tales are enhanced by ethnographic information about the indigenous peoples who still tell these stories.<u></u><u></u></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
The author has selected tales not from the well-known Aztec or Mayan tradition, but from the Tarahumara, Seri, Huichol, Triqui and Tseltal peoples. Each short tale is followed by a description of the group’s traditional customs and their contemporary lives, including their use of cars and computers (and, in the Huichol chapter, ceremonial peyote by chosen adults). The stories attest to the ingenuity of the cricket, Señor Grillo, over the force of Señor Puma’s army and to the steadfastness of Mosni, the sea turtle, whose journey to bring sand from the ocean floor enabled Hant Caai, the Seri god of creation, to create land that humans would inhabit. The Huichol story explains why the opossum has a bare but prehensile tail. The humorous Triqui tale describes insects invented by their god of creation to make Man and Woman do some real work, and the last story recounts the scary encounter between a large buzzard and a small frog. The book is handsomely designed, with full-bleed acrylic-and-watercolor paintings on heavily textured papers starting off each story. Realistic vignettes emphasizing folk art and intricate clothing illustrate the informational sections. Comprehensive glossaries (with pronunciation guides) accompany each story, and a scholarly bibliography and index round out the volume.<u></u><u></u></div>

One of the most satisfying folklore collections in recent memory. <em>(Folk tales. 7-11)</em></div>
