Nueva Mac/New Mac

Pues, por fin lo hice y me acabo de comprar una Mac de escritorio. Estoy encantada aunque todavía me falta aprender un montón, pese a las dos horas de clases que me han dado en la tienda. Claro que lo que te enseñan es lo más básico. Es cuestión de tiempo, tiempo que necesito para ponerme a jugar al explorador y meterme a todos los lugares donde no me he metido y hacer click sin miedo de que algo desaparezca. Mucha gente, entre ellos mi hijo, me dijeron, cuando se enteraron de que quería comprar una computadora de escritorio nueva, que comprara una Mac.  Al principio, me detuve por la diferencia de precio entre una PC y una Mac pero, tomando en cuenta que es para varios años, por fin me decidí por ella. Confieso que, de lo que he visto hasta ahora, me va a servir muy bien. Espero que, en un par de semanas, ya sea más ducha en el asunto. Mientras tanto, ya estoy escribiendo cuentos en ella y trabajando en un proyecto multimedia, lo cual es muy emocionante.

Well, I finally did it and I just bought a desktop Mac. I'm thrilled though I still need to learn a lot of things, even though I've taken two hours of classes where I bought it. Of course, they teach nyou the most basic stuff. It's a question of time, time that I need to play that I'm an explorer so that I can enter a lot of places where I haven't gone yet and click without being afraid that something will disappear. Many people, among them my son, told me, when they found out that I wanted to buy a new desktop computer, to get a Mac. At first, the difference in price between a PC and a Mac detained me but, taking into consideration that it's for several years, I decided to get it. I confess that, from what I've seen till now, it will serve me well. I hope that, in a few weeks, I'll be better able to use it. Menawhile, I'm already writing a few stories on it and working on a multimedia project, which is very exciting.

Highlights Founder's Workshops

Back from an excellent workshop focused on Middle Grade novels with Rich Wallace. Organized by the Highlights family, it was a great experience. I learned a lot, had a wonderful time, stayed in a comfy cabin (number 20, which everyone seems to covet), breathed fresh air, ate like a queen (Marcia is an amazing chef!), and talked constantly about kids books with like-minded people without having other people look at us as if we're crazy. 

At first, we were supposed to be five participants but two had to cancel at the last moment. This, of course, meant that we had more individual attention from Rich. I had to rewrite and rethink much of my story, which was a good experience, plus add more details, something that I sometimes forget to do since I'm so used to writing picture books. So, now I have lots of homework but I'm happy with the path the novel is taking.

De regreso de un excelente taller sobre novelas para lectores de entre 8 y 12 años (más o menos) con Rich Wallace. Organizado por la familia Highlights (publican revistas y libros), fue una gran experiencia. Aprendí mucho, la pasé de maravilla, me quedé en la cabaña 20 (aparentemente la que todo mundo quiere), respiré aire puro, comí como reina (marcia es una asombrosa chef), y hable constantemente sobre libros para niños con gente que piensa similar que yo sin que otras personas piensen que estamos locos. Si les interesa, busquen HIghlight's Founder's Workshops en el Internet para ver que talleres hay para autores e ilustradores. 

Al principio íbamos a ser cinco participantes pero dos tuvieron que cancelar al último momento. Esto, claro, resultó en que tuvimos más atención individual de Rich. Tuve que reescribir y repensar gran parte de mi historia, lo que fue una muy buena experiencia, además de agregar más detalles, algo a veces se me olvida hacer ya que estoy más acostumbrada a escribir libro álbum. Ahora tengo bastante tarea pero estoy contenta con el camino que va tomando la novela.

Cuentos para bebés/Books for tots

Los libros para bebés son los más difíciles de escribir, aunque no lo crean. En 500 palabras (y mucho menos) no es sencillo escribir un cuento redondo, con un principio, desarrollo, climax y final satisfactorio para el lector. Claro que se puede depender de las ilustraciones para dar mucha información pero hay que tomar en cuenta que, sin un texto fuerte,bien escrito y donde cada palabra cuenta, no servirán de mucho. Hay gente que cree, equivocadamente, que por ser breves son fáciles. Los invito a escribirlos. Ya me dirán cómo les fue. Ahorita estoy en el proceso de escribir varios y, aunque me estoy divirtiendo un chorro, confieso que no es fácil.

Books for tots are the hardest to write, believe it or not. In 500 words (or much less) it's not easy to write a good story, one with a beginning, a middle, a climax and a satisfying end for the reader. Of course, one can depend on the illustrations to provide a lot of information, but you must have a strong, well written story and where every word counts because the art alone won't be enough. There are people who wrongly believe that, because they are brief, they are easy to write. I extend an invitation to you to write one. You can then let me know how you did. Right now I am in the process of writing several and, though I'm having a ball, I confess that it's dificult.

Los 60/The 60s

Estoy empezando a escribir una novela para lectores de (creo) entre 9 y 11 años de edad. La he situado en el México de los 60... más bien 1967 o 1968, cuando yo entraba en la adolescencia. Hoy empezé a investigar algunas cosas como, por ejemplo, la moda y el "slang" que usabamos en ese entonces. No estoy escribiendo de mi vida (es más, el personaje principal es un niño) pero sí estoy usando eventos, personas, lugares, etc., de esos tiempos como, por ejemplo, en mi escuela, el Colegio Americano, lugar donde estudié desde kinder hasta que terminé la prepa. ¡Qué buena escuela! Tengo tantos gratos recuerdos de mis años allí y, más que nada, de los buenos amigos y amigas que conservo hasta la fecha y de los maestros, las bibliotecas, los salones, los diferentes eventos que se organizaban, lo que aprendí y un enorme etcétera. Me divertí mucho el día de hoy recordando las mini-faldas y maxi-faldas, las botas a go-go, los peinandos, los jeans acampanados, las camisetas tie-dye, el signo de paz, etc. Me parece que, entre más recuerde, más me divertiré escribiendo esta nueva aventura.

I am starting to write a Middle Grade novel for readers between the ages of 9 and 11 (I think). I've set it in the Mexico of the 60s... 1967 or 1968, when I was becoming an adolescent. Today I began to research some things, for instance fashion and the slang we used then. I'm not writing about my life (in fact, the main character is a boy) but I am using events, people, places, etc., from that time such as, for instance, my school, The American School. the place where I studied from kinder till I finished High School. What a good school! I have such great memories of my years there and, more than anything, of the good friends I have to this day plus the teachers, the libraries, the classrooms, different events that were organized, what I learned and a huge etcetera. I had a great time today remembering things like mini skirts and maxi skirts, go-go boots, hairdos, bellbottom jeans. tie-dye t-shirts, the peace symbol, etc. I think that, the more I remember, the more fun I'll have writing this new adventure.

Persépolis/Maus

Acabo de leer dos novelas gráficas: Persépolis, escrita e ilustrada por Marjane Satrapi, y Maus, escrito e ilustrado por Art Spiegelman. Las dos son similares en que tratan el tema de la guerra y la intolerancia y cómo han afectado (profundamente) la vida del sus protagonistas. Son muy buenas y se recomiendan a cualquiera aunque, en el caso de lectores jóvenes, son más apropiados para adolescentes por los temas que tratan y la forma muy gráfica con que los eventos son narrados. Es notorio cómo el formato de novela gráfica se presta tan bien para contar historias tan desgarradoras. La novela gráfica es un género que gusta mucho a lectores jóvenes y puede ser una forma de acercarlos a los libros "tradicionales".

I just read two graphic novels: Persepolis, written and illustrated by Marjane Satrapi, and Maus, written and illustrated by Art Spiegelman. The two are similar in that they're about war and intolerance and how they have (profoundly) affected the lives of their protagonists. They are very good and I recommend them to everyone though, in the case of young readers, they are more appropiate for adolescents due to the themes and the graphic way that the events are narrated. It's noticeble how the graphic novel format is so good for telling such impacting stories. Graphic novels are very popular with young readers and can be used to introduce them to "traditional" books.

¡¡Ya salió De astutos, tragones y mordelones!! De astutos, tragones y mordelones is released!

Hace unos días salió mi nuevo libro, De astutos, tragones y mordelones, con ilustraciones del muy talentoso Juan Gedovius  publicado por Editorial Norma. ¡Quedó hermoso! Excelente ilustración y  diseño y tres preciosos cuentos de tradición oral de México con personajes muy divertidos. Ya avisaré cuando sea la presentación oficial. ¡Será una agradable sorpresa que todavía hay que confirmar! Y, preguntaré a alguien más docto que yo en asuntos computacionales cómo subir la foto de la portada (y las portadas de mis otros libros...) al blog para que la puedan ver. Confieso que me asombra que pude subir mi photo el otro día.

Just a few days ago my new book, De astutos, tragones y mordelones, with illustrations by the very talented Juan Gedovius and published by Editorial Norma. It's beautiful! Excellent illustration and design and three great Mexican folktales with very funny characters. I'll let everyone know when the formal presentation will be done. It will be a lovely surprise which still has to be confirmed. And I'll ask someone who is more techie than me how to upload the cover to the blog (as well as the covers of my other books...) so that everyone can see it. I confess that I am amazed that I was able to upload my photo the other day :-)

Ray Bradbury y sus cuentos mexicanos

Me encanta Ray Bradbury. Me gusta su imaginación, los vuelcos de tuerca y finales totalmente inesperados y la forma en que usa el lenguaje. Es un deleite leerlo: una vez para zambullirse en el cuento y las demás para ver cómo lo hizo. Desde chica me topé con Las crónicas marcianas y, desde entonces, he leído muchos de sus cuentos, novelas y novelas cortas. Entre los cuentos que más me gustan son los de Douglas Spaulding, su alter ego y memoria de su niñéz, en libros como Dandelion Wine y en cuentos sueltos que aparecen en varias antologías. También me encantan sus cuentos mezcla de realidad y fantasía, los de terror y cualquiera que tenga que ver con Marte. Otros son los que escribió sobre México porque hablaban de lo nuestro. ¿Los han leído? Los que más me gustan, aunque son bastante terroríficos, son The Lifework of Juan Díaz, The End of the Line, Calling Mexico y El Día de Muerte. Se los recomiendo, aunque las palabras en español usado en los originales en inglés están incorrectas en muchos casos.

I love Ray Bradbury. I like his imagination, his turn of the screw and totally unexpected ends and the way he uses language. It's a delight to read him: one time to dive into the story and the other times to see how he did it. From an early age I bumped into The Martian Chronicles and, since then, I've read many of his stories, novels and novellas. Among the stories I like the most are the ones about Douglas Spaulding, his alter ego and recipient of his childhood memories, in books like Dandelion Wine and other stories which appear in several anthologies. I also love the stories that meld realism with fantasy, his horror stories and any that have to do with Mars. Others are those he wrote about Mexico because they talk about what is ours. Have you read them? Those I like the most, though they are quite terrifying, are The Lifework of Juan Díaz, The End of the Line, Calling Mexico and El Día de Muerte. I highly recommend them, even if many of the words used in Spanish in the original English versions are incorrect in most cases.
