Tips for reading with your baby/Tips para leer con tu bebé

It's never too early to read to your baby. As soon as your baby is born, he or she starts learning. Just by talking to, playing with, and caring for your baby every day, you help your baby develop language skills necessary to become a reader. By reading with your baby, you foster a love of books and reading right from the start.

Snuggle up with a book

When you hold your baby close and look at a book together, your baby will enjoy the snuggling and hearing your voice as well as the story. Feeling safe and secure with you while looking at a book builds your baby's confidence and love of reading.

Se me olvidó decirles que el libro Uncle Monarch and the Day of the Dead fue publicado por Boyds Mills Press/I forgot to say that the book Uncle Monarch and the Day of the Dead was published by Boyds Mills Press.

Cambios y portadas de algunos de mis libros/Changes and covers of some of my books

I'm going to do a few important changes on my blog starting today and little by little. One of them will be to upload the covers of some of my books with a short description of them. Another will be to put, in separate columns, the Spanish and the English texts. While I figure out how to do this (because I don´t know how to at this moment but surely it's veeeeery easy) instructions geared to a six-year-old are gratefully accepted...

Dinos, fábulas, adivinanzas, perros y loros/Dinosaurs, fables, riddles, dogs, and parrots

What do they have in common? Well, as usual I’m involved in several projects at the same time and, though it’s hard, sometimes I have to change channels several times a day so that I can work on them at the same time. They say that women are good at multitasking and I think there is a certain truth to this because doing several things at the same time requieres maximum concentration on one theme without ignoring the rest. This is why I will now concentrate on reading a book about dinosaurs since this morning was dedicated to fables and riddles, I took out Becca, my dog, a couple of times (which helps me think better and resolve situations in my manuscripts), and now I’m going to bring in Lucas, my parrot, because he wants his supper and is making a scandal. After, the dog and I will be busy: she taking a nap and me reading about dinosaurs. It’s fun and reminds me of when my sons where dinosaur crazy. At home, and in order to feed their curiosity, we had several books about dinos but I don’t know where they are since my bookshelves are a disaster: full of rows and rows of books which doesn’t allow me to find what I need. Of course, one of my eternal projects is organizing my library but I’ve never been able to do it. I’ve been living in this house for thrity years and haven’t done it… and I doubt I ever will.

A few days ago I was told something that moved me to the bone. A while back I sent my grandkids a book published in Mexico with activities that can be done with paper and scissors and published, I believe, by Educal. I did it because my grandkids love to do things with their hands and, since the book is lovely, I was sure they would like it. My daughter-in-law works in a school in Israel and, since she doesn’t speak Spanish and my son hadn’t had time to tell her how to do some of the activities in the book, she lent it to a student, a10-year-old Colombian girl, thinking that she could read it and then explain what and how to do the activities so that she, in turn, could explain them to my grandkids. She told me that the child was timid, lost in her thoughts, and didn’t have any friends but that, when she saw the book her eyes shone and she asked for permission to take the book home for a week. She made some of the activities and took one or a few to school to show them to her teacher. Nobody in school knew that she had such talented hands. Her teacher was amazed and asked her to teach her classmates how to do them, which she did with enthusiasm. Her behaviour changed completely (it’s almost as if she’s now another child) and, besides, the other girls got closer to see what else she can do. Now she has friends! Isn’t it wonderful what a book made in Mexico can do for a child in another country? I continue to believe that books are magical.

Many years ago, I went to a workshop about reading and one of the activities was to write our reading autobiography. It was a great experience because I remembered things I thought I had forgotten.
My parents were and continue to be great readers and our house was always full of books. There were books in the bedrooms, in the living room, and in a small room which was the library, were there were shelves from the floor to the ceiling along two walls. I spent many hours in the library, surrounded by books of art, science, science fiction, novels, and short stories as well as comics, magazines, and books of esoteric themes, ghost stories (which I loved but also scared me at the same time) and many books for kids. One of my first memories is of my mother reading to me from a book of fairy tales (which I still have) and, later, of often going with my dad to the Librería Británica to buy books. Besides, the school where I went had wonderful libraries. The list of books I remember is long and I like to think about them. I do so fondly and I invite you to do it. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.
