Cacareando el huevo/Tooting my own horn

Como dicen que hay que cacarear el huevo, estoy muy contenta de anunciar que tres de mis libros fueron preseleccionados para el Programa Nacional de Lectura de México: Muyal, un cuento maya ilustrado por Mónica Padilla, Editorial Progreso; De astutos, tragones y mordelones, con tres cuentos de tradición oral mexicano ilustrado por Juan Gedovius y publicado por Editorial Norma y ¡Vamos a comer... bichos! (que, en México, son insectos) con fotos de mi hijo Ilán Rabchinskey, ilustraciones de Margarita Sada y publicado por Ediciones SM. Toda la buena vibra que me mandaron el año pasado sirvió para que Sapo y Yuku, un cuento yaqui, resultara selecionado para el año escolar 2011-2012. Por eso les pido que manden buena vibra. La lista final se dará a conocer a partir del 19 de julio y estoy haciendo changuitos que por lo menos uno quedará seleccionado. Pero si eso no sucede, estoy satisfecha que los libros están en la lista porque la competiencia está fuerte.

Since they say that one must toot one’s own horn, I am very happy to announce that three of my books were preselected for the Mexican government’s reading program: Muyal, a Maya folktale illustrated by Monica Padilla and published by Editorial Progreso; De astutos, tragones y mordelones, with three Mexican folktales illustrated by Juan Gedovius and published by Editorial Norma; and ¡Vamos a comer…bichos!, about edible bugs from Mexico, with photos by my son Ilan Rabchinskey, illustrations by Margarita Sada, and published by Ediciones SM. All the good vibes sent my way last year did the trick and one of my books, Sapo y Yuku, a Yaqui story, was chosenfor the 2011-2012 school year so please send positive energy my way again. The final list of selected books will be released as of July 19 and I am hoping that at least one book is selected. And even if that doesn’t happen, I am still thrilled that the books are on the list since competition is very stiff.

Tips for reading with your baby/Tips para leer con tu bebé

It's never too early to read to your baby. As soon as your baby is born, he or she starts learning. Just by talking to, playing with, and caring for your baby every day, you help your baby develop language skills necessary to become a reader. By reading with your baby, you foster a love of books and reading right from the start. 

Snuggle up with a book

When you hold your baby close and look at a book together, your baby will enjoy the snuggling and hearing your voice as well as the story. Feeling safe and secure with you while looking at a book builds your baby's confidence and love of reading.

Nunca es muy pronto para leerle a su bebé. En cuanto nace, su bebé empieza a aprender. Simplemente hablándole, jugando y cuidándolo todos los días, usted ayuda a su bebé a desarrollar las destrezas lingüísticas necesarias para que se convierta en lector. Al leer con su bebé, usted le fomenta el amor a los libros y la lectura desde el comienzo.

Acurrúquense con un libro

Cuando sostiene a su hijo en sus brazos y miran juntos un libro, su bebé disfruta de acurrucarse junto a usted y escuchar su voz y el cuento también. Al sentirse seguro en sus brazos mientras mira un libro, aumenta la confianza de su bebé y su amor por la lectura.

Cambios y portadas de algunos de mis libros/Changes and covers of some of my books

Voy a hacer un par de cambios importantes en el blog a partir de hoy y de manera paulatina. Una de ellas será colocar las portadas de algunos de mis libros con una pequeña reseña de ellos. Otra será poner, en columnas separadas, el texto en español y en inglés. Mientras atino en cómo hacerlo (porque no sé cómo en este momento pero seguramente es algo muuuuy fácil) se aceptan, con agradecimiento, instrucciones como para una niña de seis años...

I'm going to do a few important changes on my blog starting today and little by little. One of them will be to upload the covers of some of my books with a short description of them. Another will be to put, in separate columns, the Spanish and the English texts. While I figure out how to do this (because I don´t know how to at this moment but surely it's veeeeery easy) instructions geared to a six-year-old are gratefully accepted...

Dinos, fábulas, adivinanzas, perros y loros/Dinosaurs, fables, riddles, dogs, and parrots

¿Qué tienen en común todos? Pues, que, para variar, ando metida en muchos proyectos al mismo tiempo y, aunque me cuesta trabajo, tengo que cambiar de canal, a veces varias veces al día, para poder trabajar en todo al mismo tiempo. Dicen que las mujeres somos buenas para el "multitasking" y creo que hay cierta razón en esto pues andar del tingo al tango requiere de concentrarse a lo máximo en cada tema de estos sin descuidar los demás. Por eso, me retiro a leer un libro sobre dinosaurios ya que ya la mañana estuvo dedicada a las fábulas y las adivinanzas, saqué a caminar a Becca, mi perra, un par de veces (lo que me ayuda a pensar mientras camino y a resolver situaciones que tienen que ver con los cuentos que estoy escribiendo) y ahora voy a meter al loro, que se llama Lucas, porque ya quiere cenar y eso quiere decir que está armando un escándalo. Después, la perra y yo estaremos muy ocupadas: ella durmiendo y yo leyendo sobre dinosaurios. Es algo muy divertido y me recuerda cuando mis hijos eran pequeños y estaban locos por los dinos. En la casa, para alimentar esa curiosidad, teníamos varios libros sobre el tema pero no sé dónde están porque mis libreros son un desastre: llenos de varias hileras de libros, lo que no permite localizar el que se necesita. Claro que uno de mis eternos proyectos es el de organizar la biblioteca pero nunca lo he podido hacer. Llevo 30 años en esta casa y nunca lo he hecho y creo que nunca lo haré.

What do they have in common? Well, as usual I’m involved in several projects at the same time and, though it’s hard, sometimes I have to change channels several times a day so that I can work on them at the same time. They say that women are good at multitasking and I think there is a certain truth to this because doing several things at the same time requieres maximum concentration on one theme without ignoring the rest. This is why I will now concentrate on reading a book about dinosaurs since this morning was dedicated to fables and riddles, I took out Becca, my dog, a couple of times (which helps me think better and resolve situations in my manuscripts), and now I’m going to bring in Lucas, my parrot, because he wants his supper and is making a scandal. After, the dog and I will be busy: she taking a nap and me reading about dinosaurs. It’s fun and reminds me of when my sons where dinosaur crazy. At home, and in order to feed their curiosity, we had several books about dinos but I don’t know where they are since my bookshelves are a disaster: full of rows and rows of books which doesn’t allow me to find what I need. Of course, one of my eternal projects is organizing my library but I’ve never been able to do it. I’ve been living in this house for thrity years and haven’t done it… and I doubt I ever will.
