Libros de temas latinos en EEUU/Books About Latino Themes in the US

En los Estados Unidos hay una enorme población latinoamericana y cada año crece más. Hace poco, salieron dos artículos sobre la falta de libros para niños y adolescentes con personajes latinos con los que se puedan identificar los niños mexicanos, salvadoreños, hondureños, etc. No quiere decir que no hay libros con personajes latinos pero no son tantos como debería haber y, en muchos casos, no son los personajes principales. Muchos de los libros que tratan temas latinos tienen que ver, en su mayoría, con la experiencia de migración, que es un tema importante y no hay que menospreciarlo, pero rara vez se ven libros donde el personaje es, simplemente, como cualquier niño que tiene que lidiar con los problemas de cualquier niño.  Los lectores quieren leer, más que nada y además de los temas de la migración, buenas historias donde el personaje es latino como ellos y donde ven reflejada su realidad. Ojalá los editores vean el potencial y produzcan más libros como estos pues los padres de familia, bibliotecas y escuelas seguramente los comprarán.

In the US there is a big Latino population and each year it grows. Recently, two articles came out that addressed the fact that there is a derth of books for kids and adolescents with Latino characters with which Mexican, Salvadoran, Honduran, etc., kids can identify with. This is not to say that there are no books with Latino characters but there aren't as many as there should be and, besides, Latino kids are usually not the main ones. Many of the books that are about Latinos are usually about the migrant experience, which is an important theme and not to be looked down on, but rarely are there books where the main character is Latino and is simply a kid facing the problems of any kid. Readers want to read, more than anything (and as well as) those that talk about migration, good stories where the character is Latino like them and where they can see their own reality. Hopefully, publishers will see the potential and will produce more books like these so that parents, libraries and schools can buy them.

Receta de pavo al whisky

Hoy no voy a hablar de libros para niños. Más bien, les paso la receta secreta de familia para el pavo navideño o de Año Nuevo.

To my English-speaking friends, sorry I can't translate this secret family recipe for a Christmas or New Year's turkey. It's called Whiskey Turkey.

Señoras y señores...aquí va la receta más buena de pavo, para que la hornee esta Navidad...No se la pierda:

PAVO AL WHISKY

Ingredientes:

1 pavo de unos 7 kilos

1 botella de whisky

unas tiras de tocino

aceite de oliva

sal y pimienta

Paso 1: Rellenar el pavo con el tocino, atarlo, salpimentar y echarle un chorrito de aceite de oliva.

Paso 2: Precalentar el horno a 180º durante 10 minutos.

Paso 3: Servirse un vaso de whisky para hacer tiempo.

Paso 4: Meter el pavo en el horno.

Paso 5: Servirse otro vaso de whisky, bebérselo y mirar el horno con ojos ligeramente extraviados.

Paso 6: Boner el terbostato a 150º y esberar veinte binutos.

Paso 7: Servirse odros dos vasos.

Vaso 8: Algabo de un drato, hornir el abro bara gondrolar y echar un chodretón de pavo al güisky y a uno bisbo.

Baso 9: Darle la vuelta al babo y quebarse la bano al cerrar elorno ... ¡bierda!

Bassssso 10: Intentar sentarrrrrrrse en una silla y serbirrrrrrrrse unos chupitosssss bientras bassan los binutos.

Parso 11: Retirar el babo del orrrno y luego regogerrrrrrlo del suelo con un drapo, embujándolo al blato, andeja o similar.

Faso 12: Romberse lagrisssssssma al resbalar en la grasa.

Paaa... 13: Indendar lebandarse sin soltar la vodella y, dras barios indendos, decidir ge en el suelo se esdha de narices.

Aso 14: Apburar la vodella y adrastarse asta la gama. Dormir ... se.

Paso 15: A la mañana siguiente, tomar abundante café para el inexplicable dolor de cabeza, comerse el pavo frío con un cazo de mayonesa y, el resto del día, dedicarlo a limpiar el estropicio organizado en la cocina.

Acabo de ver la portada de Dos leyendas aztecas, con los cuentos Los huesos sagrados y El nuevo sol. ¡Me encantó! Ilustrado por Ángel Campos, es uno de los lanzamientos, durante la FILIJ, de Ediciones SM. Los espero en la firma de libros el 11 de noviembre a las 12 horas en el stand de la editorial.

I just saw the cover of Dos leyendas aztecas (Two Aztec Legends), with the stories Los huesos sagrados (The Sacred Bones) and El nuevo sol (The New Sun). I loved it! Illustrated by Ángel Campos Frías, it's one of the new releases of Ediciones SM during the children's book fair in Mexico City. I'll be signing books on November 11th at 12 PM at the publisher's stand.

La FILIJ, presentaciones de libros y firmas/The International Children's Book Fair, book presentations and signings

¡Ya se acerca la 32 FILIJ, la fiesta de los libros! Habrá montones de libros muy padres, actividades, conciertos, talleres y presentaciones de libros. 

Acompáñame el día 11 de noviembre a las 18 horas cuando, junto con Columba Domínguez y Germán Zúñiga, editores de Yo Sí Leo, y Rubí Juárez, ilustradora, presentaremos Un grito en la oscuridad y otros cuentos de terror. Será en el Aula Magna del CNA (Centro Nacional de las Artes), Churubusco y Tlalpan, en la Ciudad de México. Se te va a enchinar la piel y parar los pelos de punta... y después nos vamos al stand de la editorial a firmar libros.

Y el 19 de noviembre presentaré, junto con Lorenza Estandía, mi editora en Editorial Norma, e Irma Bastida, ilustradora, el libro Cuentos antiguos para niños modernos, con tres sorpresivos cuentos muy divertidos. Esto será a las 13 horas en el espacio Café y letras y después habrá firma de libros  en el stand de la editorial.

Además, estaré firmando libros en los siguientes stands:

The 32nd International Children's Book Fair (FILIJ), a celebration of books, is almost here! There will be mountains of books, activities, concerts, workshops, and book presentations.

Join me on November 11 at 6 PM when, together with Columba Domínguez and Germán Zúñiga, editors of Yo Sí Leo, and Rubí Juárez, illustrator, we present Un grito en la oscuridad y otros cuentos de terror (with spooky tales from colonial Mexico). This will be in the Aula Magna of the CNA (The Arts Center), Churubusco and Tlapan, in Mexico City. You'll get goose bumps and your hair will stand on end... and then we'll go to the stand to sign books.

And on November 19th I'll present, along with Lorenza Estandía, my editor at Editorial Norma, and Irma Bastida, illustrator,  the book Cuentos antiguos para niños modernos (Ancient Stories for Modern Children), with three fun and surprising stories. This will be at 1 PM in the area called Café y Letras and later there will be a book signing at the stand of the publisher.

¡Ya viene Día de Muertos! Comeremos pan de muerto dulce (¡qué delicia!), calaveritas de azucar, de chocolate y de amaranto y mucha gente irá a los panteones a limpiar las tumbas de sus seres queridos y pasarán la noche ahí ––rodeados de hermosas flores de cempazuchitl, cirios, comida y rezos–– para darles la bienvenida y recordarlos con cariño y respeto. Hay muchos libros para niños sobre el tema publicados en México y en los Estados Unidos, donde el tema de la celebración causa mucho curiosidad. Uno de ellos es Uncle Monarch and the Day of the Dead, cuya portada está a la derecha.

Los dejo con unas fotos mientras me voy a comprar un pan de muerto para la merienda. Es maravilloso con chocolate caliente.

Día de muertos (the Day of the Dead) is almost here! We'll eat sweet pan de muerto (delicious!) and skulls made out of sugar, chocolate, and amaranth and many people will go to the cemeteries to clean the tombs of their dear ones and spend the night there ––surrounded by beautiful cempazuchitl flowers, candles, food, and prayers–– welcoming them and remembering them with love and respect. There are many children's books published about this celebration, both in Mexico and the US, where the celebration causes a lot of curiosity. One of them is Uncle Monarch and the Day of the Dead, pictured to the right.
