¡Felices fiestas!/Happy holidays!

La Navidad y Jánuca están a la vuelta así como el 2012, que a tanta gente tiene con los pelos de punta gracias a todas las "profecías" que, según algunas personas, pronostican el fin del mundo. Por favor no les hagan caso: más bien pónganse a trabajar y a divertirse y, en las fiestas, celebren por todo lo bueno que nos da la vida como disfrutar de nuestras familias y amigos y tener oportunidades de reir, maravillarnos de la naturaleza, leer un buen libro, ver una magnifica película, hacer ejercicio, comer unos buenos tacos o chilaquiles y disfrutar de la vida en general lo mejor que podemos. A todos les deseo lo mejor y denles muchos abrazos a los que tienen cerca que los abrazos curan.

Christmas and Hannukah are right around the corner and so is 2012, which has so many people scared thanks to all the "profecies" that, according to some people, are saying that the world will soon come to an end. Please don't pay attention to them: better get to work and have fun and, during this holiday season, celebrate all the good things that life has given to you such as enjoying our families and friends and having the chance to laugh, marvel at what nature gives us, read a good book, watch a magnificent movie, do exercise, eat some good tacos or chilaquiles, and enjoy life in general as best as we can. I hope everyone has a great holiday season and hug those near you because hugs can heal.

The FILIJ, the best book fair for kids and adolescents, where you'll find loads of books of all prices, starts in a few days! The inauguration is on the 11th of November and, besides the sale of books, there will be presentations of new titles, books signings, shows, and storytellers. Presentación del libros en la FILIJ /Book Presentations in the FILIJ

¡Estamos de manteles largos! Rubí Juárez, ilustradora, animadora y programadora, y yo estaremos en la Feria Internacional del Libro Infantil y Juvenil  (FILIJ) presentando libros. Por mi parte, presento De astutos, tragones y mordelones, con las ilustraciones llenas de humor de Juan Gedovius y publicado por Editorial Norma. El libro tiene tres cuentos muy divertidos, con varios conejos y jaguares, un zorrillo y varios personajes más, todos de nuestra rica tradición oral mexicana. La cita es el sábado 12 de noviembre a la 1 de la tarde en el espacio Café y letras. Después habrá firma de libros. Rubí presenta el libro de Alma Velasco No te preocupes, divertido cuento publicado por Editorial Porrúa, el domingo 13 de noviembre a las 5 de la tarde. Ella hizo las ilustraciones y te vas a divertir con ellas y ella. ¡Ahí nos vemos!

We're celebrating! Rubí Juárez, illustrator, animator and programmer, and I will be at the Feria Internacional del Libro Infantil y Juvenil  (FILIJ) presenting books. On my part, I'll be presenting De astutos, tragones y mordelones, with the humourous illustrations of Juan Gedovius and published by Editorial Norma. The book has three very entertaining folktales, with several rabbits and jaguars, a skunk and a cast of other characters, all from the rich traditions of Mexico. The date is Saturday, the 12th of November, at 1 pm in the area Café y letras. There will be a book signing after. Rubí presents Alma Velasco's book No te preocupes, a fun story published by Editorial Porrúa, on Sunday, the 13th of November, at 5 pm. She did the illustrations and you'll have fun with them and her. See you there!

El Encuentro Internacional de Cultura Lectora es un espacio de reflexión y discusión donde profesores, promotores de lectura, ilustradores, escritores, editores y académicos se reúnen para compartir experiencias y exponer nuevos conocimientos relacionados con la promoción de la lectura.

Este año, el tema Leer abre espacios para el diálogo subraya la importancia de la lectura como un marco ideal para fomentar la comunicación de unos con otros.

En respuesta a la demanda en este Encuentro, y por primera vez dentro del programa, se realizarán talleres especializados con el fin de ampliar la formación del público asistente.

Ya se acerca la Feria Internacional del Libro Infantil y Juvenil (FILIJ) en México, D.F. Se llevará a cabo del 11 al 20 de noviembre en el Cenart (Churubusco y Tlalpan). Aunque todavía falta mucho tiempo, el sábado 12 de noviembre a la 1 de la tarde se presenta mi libro más nuevo -- De astutos, tragones y mordelones-- con las fabulosas ilustraciones de Juan Gedovius y publicado por Editorial Norma. La cita es en el espacio Café y letras. El libro tiene tres divertidos cuentos de tradición oral mexicana con dos conejos, dos jaguares, un zorrillo y otros personajes muy mexicanos.  Ojalá nos puedan acompañar.

The International Children's Book Fair (Feria Internacional del Libro Infantil y Juvenil - FILIJ) will take place in Mexico City from the 11th to the 20th of November in the Cenart (Churubusco and Tlalpan). Though there still plenty of time till then, Saturday, the 12th of November at 1 pm is the presentation of my newest book --De astutos, tragones y mordelones-- with the fabulous illustrastrations of Juan Gedovius and published by Editorial Norma. The place is Café y letras. The book has three humorous Mexican folktales and includes two rabbits, two jaguars, one skunk and a cast of very Mexican characters.  I hope you can accompany us.

¡Me acabo de dar cuenta que llevo mucho tiempo sin escribir nada en mi blog! Es, seguramente, por todo lo que he estado haciendo y los viajes que he hecho también. Es más, ahora estoy de viaje pero, como nos trajimos la laptop, puedo escribir algo, aunque sea nada más algo breve. Estoy en Israel, más bien en Tel Aviv, bella y bulliciosa ciudad a la orilla del Mediterraneo. Ayer fui a lo que se llama la Hatachaná (pronunciado, me parece, como jatajaná), la antigua estación del tren que iba de Jaffo a Tel Aviv y contruida hace más de 150 años (si no me equivoco). Estaba en ruinas y, gracias a un proyecto espectacular, ahora es un lugar lleno de restaurantes, boutiques, rieles, antiguos vagones de tren, cafecitos y una linda librería que me encantó. Ahí encontré, entre otros, el libro de Lane Smith "Es un libro" en hebreo, o sea que viene escrito de derecha a izquierda y las hojas se pasan igual. ¿Lo conocen? Si no es así, vayan corriendo a la librería más cercana a comprarlo porque es de esos libros que deben estar en nuestro librero.

I just realized that it's been a long time since I wrote anything in my blog! Chalk it up to everything I've been doing and the trips I've recently made. In fact, I'm on a trip right now, but thanks to our bringing the laptop, I can now write something though it will be brief. I'm in Israel, in fact in Tel Aviv, beautiful and active city right on the edge of the Mediterranean. Yesterday I went to the Hatachana (pronounced, I think, like hatahaná), the old station of the train that used to run from Jaffo to Tel Aviv and built, I think, around 150 years ago. It was in ruins and, thanks to a spectacular project, it is now a place filled with restaurants, boutiques, cafes, train tracks, antique trains, and a lovely bookstore. There I found Lane Smith's book "It's a Book" in Hebrew, read from right to left and the pages turned likewise. Do you know it? If you don't, run to the nearest bookstore and buy it because it's one of those books that should be on our bookshelves.

Libros para escritores

Hay muchos libros para escritores. Son, en algunos casos, como manuales y casi recetarios, pero me parece, que sin talento, imaginación, perseverancia, paciencia y ganas de levantarse del piso cuando se ha tropezado, no sirven de gran cosa. Los hay para la gente que quiere aprender a escribir (o, siquiera, ver si va por buen camino) novelas de detectives, romances, biografías, obras para niños y jóvenes y un largo etcétera. Muchos autores reconocidos los han escrito pues la gente siente, entre otras cosas, curiosidad de saber por qué y cómo escriben, algo sobre su vida y cómo han logrado producir libros con ventas millonarias. Claro que estos libros puedan ayudar al escritor a, por ejemplo, organizar su vida profesional (como, por ejemplo,darse cuenta que, en la mayoría de los casos, es necesario sentarse todos los días a escribir por lo menos dos cuartillas además de editar lo escrito anteriormente) y familiar (enseñarle a la familia, amigos, y al perro, que lo que estamos haciendo es trabajar y no un hobby y por favor no nos interrumpan a menos de que de veras sea una emergencia). He leído algunos muy buenos y de todos he aprendido algo. Los más recomendables para mi: The Zen of Writing, de Ray Bradbury, On Writing, de Stephen King y Bird by Bird, de Annie LaMott. Son divertidos y nos abren las puertas para ver cómo estos autores que son muy exitosos, escriben y sus "métodos" para lograrlo. Creo que si de cada libro de estos sacamos una idea o una pista de cómo podemos mejorar lo que escribimos es bueno. Pero, por muchos manuales que leamos, si no tenemos una buena idea y la tenacidad para llevarla a cabo, no sirven para nada. Y, aunque los que menciono no tocan el tema de los libros para niños, lo que dicen se puede aplicar a ellos. Claro que hay algunos, en inglés, que tratan nada más el tema de la LIJ, incluyendo cosas tan importantes para mi como cómo leer un contrato, cómo promocionar mis libros, cómo hacer visitas escolares, etc. Todo esto es bueno, ¿no crees?

Clima como personaje/Weather as a character

No ha dejado de llover durante más de 12 horas. Pedíamos lluvia después de tanto calor y ahora que llegó lo hizo con ganas. Ni siquiera mi perra Becca quiere salir a la calle, aunque le pongo su impermeable. Al asomarme por la ventana, me quedé pensando en cómo el clima puede y debe ser una parte muy importante de un cuento o novela para que, desde el inicio, el lector intuya, entre otras cosas, qué tipo de historia se encontrará entre las tapas del libro. No es lo mismo un día lleno de sol a uno oscuro y frío o donde llueve a cántaros. Va directamente ligado al tono de la historia. Por ejemplo, me parece que un cuento de terror es más creible si es de noche, hace frío y, además, sopla el viento a través de las ramas de los árboles. Pronto saldrá mi libro Un grito en la oscuridad, con cuentos de terror del México colonial, ilustrado por Rubí Juárez y bajo el sello editorial Yo sí leo. En todos los cuentos cuidé el tema del clima para que estuviera ad hoc con la historia. Cuando salga el libro les aviso.

It hasn't stopped raining in over 12 hours. We were asking for rain after so much heat and now that it's here it arrived with a vengeance. Not even my dog Becca wants to go out, even with her raincoat. When I looked out the window, I thought about how weather can and should be an important part of a story or novel so that, from the beginning, the reader can begin to discover, among other things, what type of story he or she will find between the covers of the book. It's not the same to have a day full of sunshine to one that is dark and cold and raining buckets. It is directly linked to the tone of the story. For example, I believe that terror is more believable if it is dark, cold and, also, the wind is blowing through the branches of the trees. My book Un grito en la oscuridad, with spooky tales from colonial Mexico, illustrated by Rubí Juárez and published by Yo sí leo books, will be out soon. In all the stories I took care to include weather that was ad hoc to the story. When the book is out I'll let you know.

Librerías especializadas/Specialized bookstores

En este momento, estoy viendo la película "Tienes un e-mail" con Tom Hanks y Meg Ryan. Es una película romántica (obvio) pero lo que me ha llamado la atención (desde que la estrenaron hace mucho años) es el tema de la pequeña librería especializada en libros para niños, cuya dueña es Meg Ryan, que se enfrenta a una cadena gigante bajo el mando de Tom Hanks. Es una lástima que estas pequeñas librerías, donde hay atención personalizada y donde los empleados conocen los libros y se los pueden recomendar a los lectores, están desapareciendo. Hoy en día, por ejemplo en los Estados Unidos, la sección infantil y juvenil de estas cadenas tiende a ser un lugar agradable lleno de libros buenos pero las personas que trabajan ahí casi nunca tienen idea de lo que están vendiendo y, por eso, rara vez pueden recomendar un libro para un lector específico. Si el lector llega buscando un libro le ayudan a localizarlo pero no le pueden decir nada sobre el tema porque no lo han leído. Estas lilbrerías, enormes, con cafetería, son un buen lugar para encontrar montones de libros pero el lector joven que tiene un interés específico muchas veces no tiene idea de dónde encontrarlo o cuál puede resultar ser el más idoneo. En México hay muy pocas librerías que son especializadas en la LIJ y sobreviven con  muchas dificultades. Ojalá hubieran más. Y en Estados Unidos cada vez hay menos.

Right now I am watching the movie "You've Got Mail", with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. It's a romantic movie (obviously) but what's always caught my attention (since the movie was released many years ago) is the theme of the small specialized bookstore specialized in kid's lit, owned by Meg Ryan, confronting a huge chain directed by Tom Hanks. It's a pity that these small shops, with personalized attention and where the employees know the books and can recommend them to the readers, are disappearing. Nowadays, in the US, the kid's and YA sections tend to be very nice and are full of good books but the people who work there rarely know what they are selling and usually can't recommend a book to a specific reader. If a client looks for a book, the staff can help him or her locate it but they can't say what the book is about because they haven't read it. These bookstores, huge and with a coffee shop, are good places to find tons of books but the young reader with a specific interest might not know where to find such a book or which might be better suited to him or her. In Mexico there are few bookstores specializing in kid's books. I wish there were more. And, in the US, there are less every time.

Libros para los más pequeños/Books for the youngest

Esta semana la autora Elena Dreser, Susana Baez, del colectivo Palabras de Arena de Cd. Juárez, y yo estuvimos en Facebook "platicando" sobre lo difícil que es escribir para los más pequeños. Contrario a lo que cree la mayoría de la gente, los libros para los de edad preescolar son los más complicados de escribir ya que se tiene que lograr un cuento redondo, interesante, bien escrito, con personajes bien logrados y con una historia que quieran leer muchas veces... con muy pocas palabras. Es un texto más bien poético. Claro que la ilustración juega un papel muy importante porque, además de iluminar el texto, le regala al lector mucha información que, por su brevedad, no aparecen en el texto. Bastante complicado, ¿no? Es un reto que me encanta y los invito a que lo intenten y después me cuenten cómo les fue. ¡Suerte! Una sugerencia es que vayan a la librería o a la biblioteca y lean muchos de estos libros para que vean cómo los autores e ilustradores lograron hacer un excelente cuento de este tipo.

This week author Elena Dreser, Susana Baez, of the Palabras de Arena group of Cd. Juárez, and I chatted on Facebook about how hard it is to write for the younger set. Contrary to popular belief, books for preschoolers are the most dificult to write since you have to produce a good, round, interesting tale with memorable characters and a story that kids will want to read again and again... and all with very few words. It is a poetic text. Of course, the illustrations play a very important part because, besides illuminating the text, it provides the reader with a lot of information that, because of its brevity, does not appear in the tale. Quite complicated, don't you think? It's something that I enjoy very much and I dare you to try it and later let me know how you did. Good luck! One suggestion is to go to the library or bookstore and read many of these books so you can see how the authors  and illustrators told an excellent story.

México Lee

Ayer, en el Monumento a la Revolución, se llevó a cabo el evento México Lee. Hubo venta de libros y lectura en voz alta de poesía y cuentos infantiles. Las autoridaded reportaron que hubo 3,000 asistentes y los organizadores dicen que hubo cerca de 10,000. Creo que la cantidad no es tan importante como que fue un muy buen inicio de un evento que, ojalá, se siga llevando a cabo año con año y cada vez con más lectores participantes. También se entregaron paquetes de libros a representantes vecinales de las 16 delegaciones del DF para formar clubes de lectura en todas las colonias. Ojalá estos clubes de lectura se aprovechen y no se conviertan en un lugar para almacenar libros que nadie lee.

Yesterday, at the Monumento a la Revolución, the México Lee (Mexico Reads) event took place. Books were sold and poetry and children's books were read out loud. The authoroties reported that there were 3,000 asistants and the organizers said 10,000. I don't think the quantity is that important since, for being the first time, it started out well and hopefully, it will continue to take place each year and each time with more participants. Packages of books were also handed out to neighborhood representatives of the 16 delegations of the capital with the idea of forming book clubs in all the neighborhoods. Hopefully, these book clubs will be used and not become mere repositories of books that nobody reads.

De vuelta/Back again

Después de un periodo de mucho trabajo (¡qué bueno!) hoy me di cuenta que no he escrito nada en el blog desde hace tiempo. Pero hoy es domingo, las cosas están algo más tranquilas y, antes de hacer otras cosas, decidí visitar el blog después de ¿dos o tres semanas? El año se va pasando con alas, tan rápido que ya casi se pasa la mitad.
La buena noticia es que el 4 de junio me invitan a platicar con niños en la nueva librería de Editorial Porrúa en Chapultepec. Está muy linda y justo enfrente del Museo de Antropología, en la entrada que está frente al Lago (que, por cierto, tiene agua de color verde limón, ¡guácala!). La librería es como una cajita de cristal, con cafetería y una zona de libros para niños muy linda. Estaré el sábado, 4 de junio, a la 1 de la tarde para platicar con el público sobre mi libro Amol iz gevén/ Érase una vez, libro con dos cuentos de tradición oral judío e ilustrado por Aurea Freniere. También estará un cuentacuentos. Ojalá me puedan acompañar.

After a period of a lot of work (great!) today I realized that I hadn't written anything in the blog in a while. But today is Sunday, things are a bit calmer and, before doing anything else, I decided to visit the blog after two or three weeks (?). The year is flying by, so fast that it's almost midyear.
The good news is that on the 4th of June I have been invited to speak to kids at the new Editorial Porrúa bookstore in Chapultepec park. It's lovely and right in front of the Anthropology Museum, at the entrance to the Lake (which, by the way, is a horrible bright green tone!). The bookstore is like a crystal box, with a cafeteria and a very nice kid's books area. I'll be there on Saturday, the 4th of June, at 1 pm, to chat with the public about my book Amol iz gevén/Érase una vez, which has two Jewish folktales illustrated by Aurea Freniere. There will also be a storyteller. I hope you can accompany me.

Nueva Mac/New Mac

Pues, por fin lo hice y me acabo de comprar una Mac de escritorio. Estoy encantada aunque todavía me falta aprender un montón, pese a las dos horas de clases que me han dado en la tienda. Claro que lo que te enseñan es lo más básico. Es cuestión de tiempo, tiempo que necesito para ponerme a jugar al explorador y meterme a todos los lugares donde no me he metido y hacer click sin miedo de que algo desaparezca. Mucha gente, entre ellos mi hijo, me dijeron, cuando se enteraron de que quería comprar una computadora de escritorio nueva, que comprara una Mac.  Al principio, me detuve por la diferencia de precio entre una PC y una Mac pero, tomando en cuenta que es para varios años, por fin me decidí por ella. Confieso que, de lo que he visto hasta ahora, me va a servir muy bien. Espero que, en un par de semanas, ya sea más ducha en el asunto. Mientras tanto, ya estoy escribiendo cuentos en ella y trabajando en un proyecto multimedia, lo cual es muy emocionante.

Well, I finally did it and I just bought a desktop Mac. I'm thrilled though I still need to learn a lot of things, even though I've taken two hours of classes where I bought it. Of course, they teach nyou the most basic stuff. It's a question of time, time that I need to play that I'm an explorer so that I can enter a lot of places where I haven't gone yet and click without being afraid that something will disappear. Many people, among them my son, told me, when they found out that I wanted to buy a new desktop computer, to get a Mac. At first, the difference in price between a PC and a Mac detained me but, taking into consideration that it's for several years, I decided to get it. I confess that, from what I've seen till now, it will serve me well. I hope that, in a few weeks, I'll be better able to use it. Menawhile, I'm already writing a few stories on it and working on a multimedia project, which is very exciting.

Highlights Founder's Workshops

Back from an excellent workshop focused on Middle Grade novels with Rich Wallace. Organized by the Highlights family, it was a great experience. I learned a lot, had a wonderful time, stayed in a comfy cabin (number 20, which everyone seems to covet), breathed fresh air, ate like a queen (Marcia is an amazing chef!), and talked constantly about kids books with like-minded people without having other people look at us as if we're crazy. 

At first, we were supposed to be five participants but two had to cancel at the last moment. This, of course, meant that we had more individual attention from Rich. I had to rewrite and rethink much of my story, which was a good experience, plus add more details, something that I sometimes forget to do since I'm so used to writing picture books. So, now I have lots of homework but I'm happy with the path the novel is taking.

De regreso de un excelente taller sobre novelas para lectores de entre 8 y 12 años (más o menos) con Rich Wallace. Organizado por la familia Highlights (publican revistas y libros), fue una gran experiencia. Aprendí mucho, la pasé de maravilla, me quedé en la cabaña 20 (aparentemente la que todo mundo quiere), respiré aire puro, comí como reina (marcia es una asombrosa chef), y hable constantemente sobre libros para niños con gente que piensa similar que yo sin que otras personas piensen que estamos locos. Si les interesa, busquen HIghlight's Founder's Workshops en el Internet para ver que talleres hay para autores e ilustradores. 

Al principio íbamos a ser cinco participantes pero dos tuvieron que cancelar al último momento. Esto, claro, resultó en que tuvimos más atención individual de Rich. Tuve que reescribir y repensar gran parte de mi historia, lo que fue una muy buena experiencia, además de agregar más detalles, algo a veces se me olvida hacer ya que estoy más acostumbrada a escribir libro álbum. Ahora tengo bastante tarea pero estoy contenta con el camino que va tomando la novela.

Cuentos para bebés/Books for tots

Los libros para bebés son los más difíciles de escribir, aunque no lo crean. En 500 palabras (y mucho menos) no es sencillo escribir un cuento redondo, con un principio, desarrollo, climax y final satisfactorio para el lector. Claro que se puede depender de las ilustraciones para dar mucha información pero hay que tomar en cuenta que, sin un texto fuerte,bien escrito y donde cada palabra cuenta, no servirán de mucho. Hay gente que cree, equivocadamente, que por ser breves son fáciles. Los invito a escribirlos. Ya me dirán cómo les fue. Ahorita estoy en el proceso de escribir varios y, aunque me estoy divirtiendo un chorro, confieso que no es fácil.

Books for tots are the hardest to write, believe it or not. In 500 words (or much less) it's not easy to write a good story, one with a beginning, a middle, a climax and a satisfying end for the reader. Of course, one can depend on the illustrations to provide a lot of information, but you must have a strong, well written story and where every word counts because the art alone won't be enough. There are people who wrongly believe that, because they are brief, they are easy to write. I extend an invitation to you to write one. You can then let me know how you did. Right now I am in the process of writing several and, though I'm having a ball, I confess that it's dificult.

Los 60/The 60s

Estoy empezando a escribir una novela para lectores de (creo) entre 9 y 11 años de edad. La he situado en el México de los 60... más bien 1967 o 1968, cuando yo entraba en la adolescencia. Hoy empezé a investigar algunas cosas como, por ejemplo, la moda y el "slang" que usabamos en ese entonces. No estoy escribiendo de mi vida (es más, el personaje principal es un niño) pero sí estoy usando eventos, personas, lugares, etc., de esos tiempos como, por ejemplo, en mi escuela, el Colegio Americano, lugar donde estudié desde kinder hasta que terminé la prepa. ¡Qué buena escuela! Tengo tantos gratos recuerdos de mis años allí y, más que nada, de los buenos amigos y amigas que conservo hasta la fecha y de los maestros, las bibliotecas, los salones, los diferentes eventos que se organizaban, lo que aprendí y un enorme etcétera. Me divertí mucho el día de hoy recordando las mini-faldas y maxi-faldas, las botas a go-go, los peinandos, los jeans acampanados, las camisetas tie-dye, el signo de paz, etc. Me parece que, entre más recuerde, más me divertiré escribiendo esta nueva aventura.

I am starting to write a Middle Grade novel for readers between the ages of 9 and 11 (I think). I've set it in the Mexico of the 60s... 1967 or 1968, when I was becoming an adolescent. Today I began to research some things, for instance fashion and the slang we used then. I'm not writing about my life (in fact, the main character is a boy) but I am using events, people, places, etc., from that time such as, for instance, my school, The American School. the place where I studied from kinder till I finished High School. What a good school! I have such great memories of my years there and, more than anything, of the good friends I have to this day plus the teachers, the libraries, the classrooms, different events that were organized, what I learned and a huge etcetera. I had a great time today remembering things like mini skirts and maxi skirts, go-go boots, hairdos, bellbottom jeans. tie-dye t-shirts, the peace symbol, etc. I think that, the more I remember, the more fun I'll have writing this new adventure.

Persépolis/Maus

Acabo de leer dos novelas gráficas: Persépolis, escrita e ilustrada por Marjane Satrapi, y Maus, escrito e ilustrado por Art Spiegelman. Las dos son similares en que tratan el tema de la guerra y la intolerancia y cómo han afectado (profundamente) la vida del sus protagonistas. Son muy buenas y se recomiendan a cualquiera aunque, en el caso de lectores jóvenes, son más apropiados para adolescentes por los temas que tratan y la forma muy gráfica con que los eventos son narrados. Es notorio cómo el formato de novela gráfica se presta tan bien para contar historias tan desgarradoras. La novela gráfica es un género que gusta mucho a lectores jóvenes y puede ser una forma de acercarlos a los libros "tradicionales".

I just read two graphic novels: Persepolis, written and illustrated by Marjane Satrapi, and Maus, written and illustrated by Art Spiegelman. The two are similar in that they're about war and intolerance and how they have (profoundly) affected the lives of their protagonists. They are very good and I recommend them to everyone though, in the case of young readers, they are more appropiate for adolescents due to the themes and the graphic way that the events are narrated. It's noticeble how the graphic novel format is so good for telling such impacting stories. Graphic novels are very popular with young readers and can be used to introduce them to "traditional" books.

¡¡Ya salió De astutos, tragones y mordelones!! De astutos, tragones y mordelones is released!

Hace unos días salió mi nuevo libro, De astutos, tragones y mordelones, con ilustraciones del muy talentoso Juan Gedovius  publicado por Editorial Norma. ¡Quedó hermoso! Excelente ilustración y  diseño y tres preciosos cuentos de tradición oral de México con personajes muy divertidos. Ya avisaré cuando sea la presentación oficial. ¡Será una agradable sorpresa que todavía hay que confirmar! Y, preguntaré a alguien más docto que yo en asuntos computacionales cómo subir la foto de la portada (y las portadas de mis otros libros...) al blog para que la puedan ver. Confieso que me asombra que pude subir mi photo el otro día.

Just a few days ago my new book, De astutos, tragones y mordelones, with illustrations by the very talented Juan Gedovius and published by Editorial Norma. It's beautiful! Excellent illustration and design and three great Mexican folktales with very funny characters. I'll let everyone know when the formal presentation will be done. It will be a lovely surprise which still has to be confirmed. And I'll ask someone who is more techie than me how to upload the cover to the blog (as well as the covers of my other books...) so that everyone can see it. I confess that I am amazed that I was able to upload my photo the other day :-)

Ray Bradbury y sus cuentos mexicanos

Me encanta Ray Bradbury. Me gusta su imaginación, los vuelcos de tuerca y finales totalmente inesperados y la forma en que usa el lenguaje. Es un deleite leerlo: una vez para zambullirse en el cuento y las demás para ver cómo lo hizo. Desde chica me topé con Las crónicas marcianas y, desde entonces, he leído muchos de sus cuentos, novelas y novelas cortas. Entre los cuentos que más me gustan son los de Douglas Spaulding, su alter ego y memoria de su niñéz, en libros como Dandelion Wine y en cuentos sueltos que aparecen en varias antologías. También me encantan sus cuentos mezcla de realidad y fantasía, los de terror y cualquiera que tenga que ver con Marte. Otros son los que escribió sobre México porque hablaban de lo nuestro. ¿Los han leído? Los que más me gustan, aunque son bastante terroríficos, son The Lifework of Juan Díaz, The End of the Line, Calling Mexico y El Día de Muerte. Se los recomiendo, aunque las palabras en español usado en los originales en inglés están incorrectas en muchos casos.

I love Ray Bradbury. I like his imagination, his turn of the screw and totally unexpected ends and the way he uses language. It's a delight to read him: one time to dive into the story and the other times to see how he did it. From an early age I bumped into The Martian Chronicles and, since then, I've read many of his stories, novels and novellas. Among the stories I like the most are the ones about Douglas Spaulding, his alter ego and recipient of his childhood memories, in books like Dandelion Wine and other stories which appear in several anthologies. I also love the stories that meld realism with fantasy, his horror stories and any that have to do with Mars. Others are those he wrote about Mexico because they talk about what is ours. Have you read them? Those I like the most, though they are quite terrifying, are The Lifework of Juan Díaz, The End of the Line, Calling Mexico and El Día de Muerte. I highly recommend them, even if many of the words used in Spanish in the original English versions are incorrect in most cases.

The Hunger Games/Los juegos del hambre

Ya sé, ya sé, es martes, no lunes y, además, el lunes pasado no escribí nada acá porque estaba fuera de México. En fin, estoy leyendo el tercer libro de la serie Los juegos del hambre y estoy picada. Bien escrito y con un ritmo bueno, personajes bien logrados y temas importantes, te lleva a darle la vuelta a la hoja constantemente. Lo que me llama la atención es la violencia que hay en ellos. Hago la aclaración que no es algo que me escandalize sino me pregunto si, en Estados Unidos (y otros países), donde hay una derecha que se siente con el derecho de prohibir la lectura de libros que consideran "inapropiados" para ciertos lectores, especialmente niños y jóvenes, no lo han prohibido. Me imagino que sí y lo checaré al rato en la página del American Library Association (ALA), que defiende los derechos del lector a leer lo que quiera. La cuestión de la censura es larga y polémica. Yo siento que el único que tiene el derecho de vetar algo es el padre de familia o tutor pero sólamente para sus hijos. No pueden ni deben pedir que se retire un título o varios de los estantes y/o se prohíba a todos (en la escuela, por ejemplo, o en la bibloteca pública). Claro que hay libros que resultan ofensivos para muchos (yo he leído varios) pero no por eso se puede pedir que se "quemen" para todos. Hay muchos libros que han sido atacados --como los de Harry Potter, por mencionar sólo un ejemplo-- pero ¿se deben ocultar o se deben leer para conocer su contenido y luego platicar del asunto? ¿Si, por ejemplo, en un libro hay una actitud racista, homofóbica, etc.,  no es mejor hablar de ello con el lector dependiendo de su edad? Siempre he creído que la lectura puede formar gente más tolerante que ve más allá de sus narices porque se pueden situar en los zapatos de él o la protagonista. En fin, es hora de ponerse a trabajar (previa salida a caminar con Becca, mi perra, para que se canse y me deje escribir). Si quieren, se pueden meter a la página de la ALA para consultar las listas de los libros para niños y jóvenes más atacados. Se sorprenderán de verlos y las razones por las cuales han sido atacados. Algunas razones son de risa.

I know, I know, it’s Tuesday, not Monday and, besides, last Monday I didn’t write anything because I wasn’t in Mexico. Anyway, I’m reading the third book in The Hunger Games series and I’m hooked. Well written and with good rhythm, well drawn characters and important themes, it makes you want to turn each page constantly. What also attracted my attention is the violence in them. I want to make it clear that it’s not something that scandalizes me but I do wonder if, in the US (and other countries), where the Right wing feels it has the right to prohibit certain books they consider “inappropriate” for certain readers, especially kids and young adults, they haven’t been censored. I imagine they have been and later on I’ll check the American Library Association’s web page. They defend the right of reading what one wants to. The censorship question is polemic and lengthy. I feel that the only ones who have a right to censor what kids read are parents and guardians. They should not and cannot demand that a title or several titles should be removed (in school, for example, or in the public library). Of course there are books that offend many (I’ve read several) but that doesn’t mean that you can ask that they be “burned” for everyone.  There are many books that have been attacked –like Harry Potter, just to mention one example—but should they be hidden or should they be read in order to know their content and later talk about it? If, for example, a book contains racist or homophobic attitudes, isn’t it better to talk about it with the reader depending on his or her age? I’ve always believed that reading can form more tolerant persons who can see further than their noses because they can walk in the shoes of the main character. Anyway, it’s time to get to work (after I take Becca, my dog, out for a long walk to tire her so she lets me write). If you want to, you can visit the ALA page to see the list of books for children and young adults that have been attacked. You’ll be amazed why they’ve been censored. Some of the reasons are hilarious.

Los libros para niños son una subliteratura?

Me molesta sobremanera que la gente que no tiene mucha idea de lo que es la literatura infantil y juvenil digan que es una subliteratura o un subgénero... Ya superada la discusión de si es o no literatura (y no me voy a molestar en aclararlo) me he topado con gente que ve, de manera bastante paternalista y simplista, lo que hacemos los que creamos estos libros. Alguien una vez me preguntó que si estaba practicando para escribir para adultos... lo cual me dejó pasmada. Piensan, me imagino, que "son libritos sin importancia. total, son para chiquitos" o "qué dulce que te dedicas a eso" y capaz que piensan que uno se sienta a escribir y el cuento, como es tan "sencillo" sale a la primera. No se necesita reescribir ni revisar... Los que nos dedicamos a esto sabemos que hasta puede ser más complicado escribir para niños y jóvenes. Los lectores de esta edad son más críticos y son muy listos, tanto que si la lectura no los atrapa desde el principio botan el libro y no lo vuelven a leer. Y, entre más pequeños los lectores más dificiles son de escribir pues con unas cuantas palabras se tiene que decir todo.
¿Qué piensan de esto?
It bothers me no end that there are people whe believe that books for kids and young adults are a subliterature or a subgenre. Once the discusion about if it is or it isn't literature (and I won't bother to clear it up) I've bumped into people who view those of us that create these books in a paternalistic and simple way. Someone once asked me if I was practicing to write for adults... which left me speechless. They think, I imagine, that these are "little books with no importance since they are for kiddies" and "how sweet that you write them" and they most probably believe that they are so "easy" to write that they come out from the first. No rewrites and revisions needed... Those of us who are dedicated to this know how complicated it can be. Readers of those ages can be very critical and smart, so much so that if you don't trap their attention from the beginning they close the book and never read it. And, the younger the kids the harder it is to write for them since, with just a few words, you have to say a lot.

Chorros de trabajo/Lots of work

Pues es lunes y he tenido tanto trabajo que mi mente ya no carbura. He estado corrigiendo y reescribiendo un manuscrito para una de mis editoras y, aunque se cambió la fecha de la junta para seguir editando, ya se lo mandé. Por lo menos estoy contenta que entregué a tiempo./It's Monday and I've had so much work that my mind has now turned to mush. I've been correcting and rewriting a manuscript for one of my editors and, even though we changed the appointment to see her and work together, I sent it in. At least, I'm happy that I delivered on time.

Lo prometido es deuda y, como dije hace dos semanas, trataré de publicar algo todos los lunes. Claro que hay que pensar muy bien en qué escribiré para no aburrir a nadie. Mañana trataré (porque soy bastante negada para algunas cosas tecnológicas) de subir las portadas de mis libros nuevos. Estoy muy contenta con ellos y cómo quedaron. Mi editora, Eva Gardenal, de Progreso Editores, hizo un muy buen trabajo: buen tamaño, bonito papel, buen diseño y las ilustraciones de cuatro excelentes ilustradores mexicanos. ¿Los títulos? Muyal, un cuento maya ilustrado por Mónica Padilla; El intercambio, un cuento maya, y Sapo y Yuku, un cuento yaqui, los dos ilustrados por Arno Avilés; Baak, un cuento maya ilustrado por Fabricio Vanden Broeck y ¡Qué delicia!, un cuento kiliwa ilustrado por Ricardo Peláez. Como se habrán dado cuenta, me encantan los cuentos de tradición oral de México. Hay una enorme riqueza de cuentos en todo el país, cuentos llenos de humor, gracia, sabiduría y conocimientos.

Hay niños y adultos que me pregunta dónde encuentro los cuentos. He oído algunos de la boca de narradores que pertenecen a los grupos indígenas pero es algo poco común porque no me conocen. Me encantaría escucharlos directamente de los narradores de los grupos pero más bien los he buscando y los sigo buscando en bibliotecas, libros, el internet, revistas y un gran etcétera ya que siempre estoy a la expectativa de encontrarlos. Busco, busco y busco y si uno me llama la atención, lo cuento a mi manera. Para evitar contar un cuento que es original pero que el autor lo ha escrito como si fuera de tradición oral (lo cual es perfectamente válido) busco por lo menos dos o tres versiones del mismo cuento para verificar que efectivamente es un cuento de folklore y porque, además, no quiero que me culpen de plagio. Cuando los cuento a mi manera, trato de hacerlo con mucho respeto. Yo no digo que soy la autora del cuento, más bien pido que en la portada diga "versión de". También mantengo archivos de las diferentes versiones de los cuentos.

En fin, para mi es un enorme placer dar a conocer estos cuentos a niños de todos lados para que se diviertan con ellos y que, de paso, aprendan algo sobre los grupos indígenas de México.

Otro día escribiré algo más sobre el tema del folklore. Hay mucho de qué hablar.

In Spanish we say "lo prometido es deuda" or "A promise is a debt" and as I said two weeks ago, I'll try to publish something every Monday. Of course, I have to think of what I will say so I don't bore everyone. Tomorrow I will try (because I'm not very techie) to upload the covers of my newest books. I'm very happy with them and how the came out. My editor, Eva Gardenal, from Progreso Editorial, did an excellent job: good size, great paper and cover, good design and illustrations by four of Mexico's best illustrators. The titles? Muyal, a Maya tale illustrated by Mónica Padilla; Sapo y Yuku, a Yaqui tale, and El intercambio, a Maya tale, both illustrated by Arno Avilés; Baak, a Maya tale illustrated by Fabricio Vanden Broeck, and ¡Qué delicia!, a Kiliwa tale illustrated by Ricardo Peláez. As you can see, I love folktales from Mexico. There is an enormous amount of stories in the whole country, stories filled with charm, humor, wisdom, and knowledge.

Kids and adults ask me where I find the stories. I've heard a few from native storytellers but it's not very often because they don't know me. I'd love to hear more stories from them but I usually find them in books, libraries, the internet, magazines, and a long etcetera since I'm always on the lookout. I look and look and look and if one attracts my attention then I retell it in my own words. To avoid retelling an original tale that the author has written like a folktale (which is perfectly valid) I look for two or three different versions to check that the story is a folktale and to avoid being sued for plagiarism. When I tell the stories in my own words I do it with a lot of respect. I never say that I am the author of the story: it says "retold by." I also keep files of the different versions I have found.

I love to present these stories to kids from all over so they can have a good time and also learn something about the naive groups of Mexico.

Another day I'll write some more about folklore. There is a lot to say.
