Leer es sembrar futuro/Reading is sowing the future

Hoy el cartero me trajo una caja pesada que me mandaron de la Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez. Adentro, encontré diez ejemplares del libro Leer es sembrar futuro, una antología compilada por la Mtra. Susana Báez Ayala y con cuentos, teatro, ensayos y poemas para los niños y jóvenes de Chihuahua. Hay obras de autores como Elena Dreser, Gilberto Rendón, Sylvia Puentes de Oyenard, Gusti, Luis Cabrera Delgado y otros escritores de España, México, Argentina, Uruguay, Cuba, Chile y Perú. Me siento halagada de estar entre ellos con mi cuento Un chile, dos chiles, tres... para los más pequeños. La antología se repartió, de manera gratuita gracias al gobierno estatal, en este lugar tan plagado de problemas y donde se pretende que, con el libro (y la lectura en general) los niños y jóvenes puedan, en palabras de Susana, "mirar un futuro de paz, un futuro de armonía, un futuro de respeto, un futuro de goce de la vida..." El libro se repartió desde abril de este año y espero que los lectores hayan disfrutado y sigan disfrutando de la lectura. ¡Gracias por permitirme participar en este proyecto! Es un honor.

Today the mailman brought me a heavy box sent by the Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez. Inside, I found ten books of Leer es sembrar futuro (Reading is sowing the future), an anthology of stories, plays, poems, and articles for kids and adolecents of the state of Chihuahua written by Elena Dreser, Gilberto Rendón, Sylvia Puentes de Oyenard, Gusti, Luis Cabrera Delgado and other writers of Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Uruguay, Cuba, Chile, and Peru, and edited by Susana Báez Ayala.  I'm flattered that my story for the preschool crowd, Un chile, dos chiles, tres..., is among them. The anthology was distributed for free (by the state government) in this place plagued with so many problems and where they intend that, with the book (and reading in general), the kids can, in Susana's words, "look towards a future of peace, a future of harmony, a future of respect, a future of enjoying life..." The book was distributed in April 2012 and I hope that its readers enjoyed and continue to enjoy it. Thank you for allowing me to to participate in this project! I'm honored.

The Magician's Elephant by/por Kate DiCamillo

Acabo de leer The Magician's Elephant, de Kate DiCamillo. Qué bonita forma de escribir y envolverte en un mundo mágico poblado de entrañables y creíbles personajes que viven en Baltese, donde el invierno cubre todo. El personaje principal es Peter Augustus Duchene, un niño huérfano que está buscando a su hermana. Otros personajes importantes son un elefante que aparece de la nada traída por un mago y Leo, un policía como los de antaño. La lectura es fluida y te atrapa desde el primer párrafo. Todos los personajes están bien trazados y no hay uno que falte o que sobre y el final es muy satisfactorio. DiCamillo también es autora de Because of Winn-Dixie, uno de mis favoritos, y The Tale of Desperaux. Se los recomiendo todos.

I just read The Magician's Elephant by Kate DiCamillo. What a fine way of writing and enveloping you in a magical world inhabited by memorable and credible characters that live in Baltese, where winter covers all. The main character is Peter Augustus Duchene, a orphan who is looking for his sister. Other important characters are an elephant that appears out of nowhere and brought by a magician and Leo, a policeman like those from before. The narrative flows and traps you from the first paragraph. All the characters are well rounded and none is superflous and all are necessary and the ending is very satisfactory. DiCamillo is also the author of Because of Winn-Dixie, one of my favorites, and The Tale of Desperaux. They are all very recommendable.

Hace unas cinco semanas salió la lista que publicó el NPR (National Public Radio de Estados Unidos) con los 100 libros para adolescentes favoritos de sus radioescuchas y que votaron a través de la página de la radiodifusora. Entre ellos, están dos de Laurie Halse Anderson, una excelente escritora de este género y autora de Speak y Wintergirls, entre otros. Ella toca el tema de que, aunque está encantada que estos dos libros aparecen en la lista, hay una falta de diversidad en ella. Su blog es excelente ––divertido, práctico e interesante–– y los invito a que vayan a su página para leerlo. Around five weeks ago, NPR (National Public Radio) released a list of the best 100 YA books published in the US according to the results of a poll among theire listeners. Among them are two by Laurie Halse Anderson, an excellent writer of this genre and author of Speak and Wintergirls, among others. Though she's thrilled that those two books are on the list, she points out the lack of diversity in it. She has an excellent blog ––fun, practical, and interesting–– and I invite you to go to her page to read it. Seraphina, por/by Rachel Hartman

Yo trato de leer a diario. A veces no es posible: hay días en que tengo mucho trabajo y tantas cosas que hacer (la familia, la casa, la perra, el loro, etc.) que, sí, a veces se me pasan las horas y me doy cuenta que no he leído gran cosa. Claro que es un decir que no he leído porque siquiera leo partes del periódico o la caja de cereal en el desayuno y, durante el día, leo e investigo para proyectos en los que estoy trabajando pero no es leer una novela. Para mi, leer una novela es lo mejor, tanto novelas (contemporáneas y clásicas) para niños y jóvenes (porque leo un montón de ellas) así como para adultos.  En este momento, estoy leyendo una novela llamada "Seraphina", de Rachel Hartman, quien ha creado un mundo maravilloso donde vive Seraphina, una joven con un talento inusual para la música, y poblado de dragones sensacionales y fuera de serie. Está tan buena la novela que no la he podido dejar. Es más, ahorita me voy a preparar una taza de té para seguir leyendo y disfrutando de este soleado domingo.

I try to read every day. Sometimes it's not possible: there are days when I have a lot of work and so many things to do (family, the house, the dog, the parrot, etc.) that, yes, sometimes hours go by and I realize that I haven't read much. Of course, saying I haven't read much really isn't true because I at least read parts of the newspaper or the cereal box at breakfast and, during the day, I read and research for projects I'm working on but it's not the same as reading a novel. For me, reading a novel for kids and adolescents, both contemporary and classic, is the best as well as those for adults. Right now, I'm reading a novel called "Seraphina" by Rachel Hartman, who created a wonderful world where Seraphina, a young woman who has an unusual musical talent, lives along with sensational and one-of-a-kind dragons. The novel is so good that I haven't been able to put it down. In fact, right now I'm going to prepare a good cup of tea and will continue reading on this sunny Sunday.

32 Feria Internacional del Libro Infantil y Juvenil – México

Del 9 al 19 de noviembre se realizará la 32 Feria Internacional de Libro Infantil y Juvenil – FILIJ- en el Centro Nacional de las Artes de la ciudad de México.

Los libros de Frank L. Baum eran y son de mis favoritos. Desde que leí El mago de Oz cuando era pequeña, sacaba todos los que tenían que ver con ese mágico lugar de la muy bien dotada biblioteca del Colegio Americano en la Cuidad de México. No había uno que no me gustara. Recuerdo que una vez perdí uno y tuve que, muy a mi pesar, entregar uno de los míos. Era Rinkitink in Oz y solo de veras me repuse cuando compré un ejemplar tiempo después. Ahora me encuentro que, siguiendo esta moda de hacer películas basadas en libros para niños y jóvenes, Walt Disney Pictures está produciendo la película Oz: The Great and Powerful, la precuela de El Mago de Oz y donde se narra la llegada del mago a la Ciudad Esmeralda. Los actores serán James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams y Abigail Spencer y se tiene programada el estreno para marzo del 2013. Será dirigida por Sam Raimi. Espero que sea muy buena y que mantenga a muchos de los personajes y situaciones originales.Queda por verse.

Frank L. Baum's books were and are some of my favorites. Since I read The Wizard of Oz when I was a kid, I took out all the books that had to do with that magical kingdom from the well-endowed library of the American School in Mexico City. There wasn't one that I didn't like. I remember that I once lost one and, much to my despair, had to turn in one of mine. It was Rinkitink in Oz and I only really got over it when, a long time later, I bought another one. Now I find that, following the fashion of making movies based on books for kids, Walt Disney Pictures is producing the movie Oz: The Great and Powerful, a prequel to The Wizard of Oz that tells the story of the wizard's arrival in the Emerald City.  The actors will be James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams, and Abigail Spencer and its release is programmed for March 2013. It will be directed by Sam Raimi. I hope it will be very good and keeps much of the original characters and situations. We'll have to wait and see.

Lorito Books Squack Notes!

ALA Panel on Spanish Selection Informs and Surprises   Brodart Books sponsored a panel presentation on Spanish collections at the American Library Association conference.  Presenters included Nerissa Moran, Brodart's Manager of Spanish Collections & Acquisitions, Milly Lugo, Santa Ana Public Library Senior Librarian and Pam Fochtman, Lorito Books President.  The highly informative presentation touched on Hispanic demographics, online sources for bestseller lists and Spanish collection circulation statistics.  Surprisingly, one of the circulation statistics reported was that audiobooks have the highest turnover rate of all material types. A second surprise was that among the 50 million Hispanics living in the United States approximately 2/3 self-identify as Mexican origin, making Mexicans clearly the largest Hispanic group nationwide. Author Spotlight: Judy Goldman         Judy Goldman, born and living in Mexico City, is proud of having been raised both bilingual and bicultural. She has written over 24 children's books in Spanish and English, many of them recreating Aztec, Mayan and Jewish myths and folktales.   Judy believes that books are magical and they were an important part of her upbringing.
