A very happy Holiday season and may 2013 be a healthful year with peace, projects, work, goals met, smiles, and hugs.

Libros de temas latinos en EEUU/Books About Latino Themes in the US

In the US there is a big Latino population and each year it grows. Recently, two articles came out that addressed the fact that there is a derth of books for kids and adolescents with Latino characters with which Mexican, Salvadoran, Honduran, etc., kids can identify with. This is not to say that there are no books with Latino characters but there aren't as many as there should be and, besides, Latino kids are usually not the main ones. Many of the books that are about Latinos are usually about the migrant experience, which is an important theme and not to be looked down on, but rarely are there books where the main character is Latino and is simply a kid facing the problems of any kid. Readers want to read, more than anything (and as well as) those that talk about migration, good stories where the character is Latino like them and where they can see their own reality. Hopefully, publishers will see the potential and will produce more books like these so that parents, libraries and schools can buy them.

Día de muertos (the Day of the Dead) is almost here! We'll eat sweet pan de muerto (delicious!) and skulls made out of sugar, chocolate, and amaranth and many people will go to the cemeteries to clean the tombs of their dear ones and spend the night there ––surrounded by beautiful cempazuchitl flowers, candles, food, and prayers–– welcoming them and remembering them with love and respect. There are many children's books published about this celebration, both in Mexico and the US, where the celebration causes a lot of curiosity. One of them is Uncle Monarch and the Day of the Dead, pictured to the right.
I leave you with a few photos (above) while I go to buy some pan de muerto for tonight. It's marvelous with hot chocolate.

Leer es sembrar futuro/Reading is sowing the future

Today the mailman brought me a heavy box sent by the Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez. Inside, I found ten books of Leer es sembrar futuro (Reading is sowing the future), an anthology of stories, plays, poems, and articles for kids and adolecents of the state of Chihuahua written by Elena Dreser, Gilberto Rendón, Sylvia Puentes de Oyenard, Gusti, Luis Cabrera Delgado and other writers of Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Uruguay, Cuba, Chile, and Peru, and edited by Susana Báez Ayala.  I'm flattered that my story for the preschool crowd, Un chile, dos chiles, tres..., is among them. The anthology was distributed for free (by the state government) in this place plagued with so many problems and where they intend that, with the book (and reading in general), the kids can, in Susana's words, "look towards a future of peace, a future of harmony, a future of respect, a future of enjoying life..." The book was distributed in April 2012 and I hope that its readers enjoyed and continue to enjoy it. Thank you for allowing me to to participate in this project! I'm honored.

The Magician's Elephant by/por Kate DiCamillo

I just read The Magician's Elephant by Kate DiCamillo. What a fine way of writing and enveloping you in a magical world inhabited by memorable and credible characters that live in Baltese, where winter covers all. The main character is Peter Augustus Duchene, a orphan who is looking for his sister. Other important characters are an elephant that appears out of nowhere and brought by a magician and Leo, a policeman like those from before. The narrative flows and traps you from the first paragraph. All the characters are well rounded and none is superflous and all are necessary and the ending is very satisfactory. DiCamillo is also the author of Because of Winn-Dixie, one of my favorites, and The Tale of Desperaux. They are all very recommendable.

Laurie Halse Anderson y la diversidad/Laurie Halse Anderson and Diversity

Around five weeks ago, NPR (National Public Radio) released a list of the best 100 YA books published in the US according to the results of a poll among theire listeners. Among them are two by Laurie Halse Anderson, an excellent writer of this genre and author of Speak and Wintergirls, among others. Though she's thrilled that those two books are on the list, she points out the lack of diversity in it. She has an excellent blog ––fun, practical, and interesting–– and I invite you to go to her page to read it. The direct link to what she wrote about the lack of diversity is http://madwomanintheforest.com/happy-sad-about-the-npr-top-100-ya-list/ and the link to her page is http://madwomanintheforest.com. Very interesting to read all the opinions and the titles of books that do not appear on the list.

Seraphina, por/by Rachel Hartman

I try to read every day. Sometimes it's not possible: there are days when I have a lot of work and so many things to do (family, the house, the dog, the parrot, etc.) that, yes, sometimes hours go by and I realize that I haven't read much. Of course, saying I haven't read much really isn't true because I at least read parts of the newspaper or the cereal box at breakfast and, during the day, I read and research for projects I'm working on but it's not the same as reading a novel. For me, reading a novel for kids and adolescents, both contemporary and classic, is the best as well as those for adults. Right now, I'm reading a novel called "Seraphina" by Rachel Hartman, who created a wonderful world where Seraphina, a young woman who has an unusual musical talent, lives along with sensational and one-of-a-kind dragons. The novel is so good that I haven't been able to put it down. In fact, right now I'm going to prepare a good cup of tea and will continue reading on this sunny Sunday.

Frank L. Baum's books were and are some of my favorites. Since I read The Wizard of Oz when I was a kid, I took out all the books that had to do with that magical kingdom from the well-endowed library of the American School in Mexico City. There wasn't one that I didn't like. I remember that I once lost one and, much to my despair, had to turn in one of mine. It was Rinkitink in Oz and I only really got over it when, a long time later, I bought another one. Now I find that, following the fashion of making movies based on books for kids, Walt Disney Pictures is producing the movie Oz: The Great and Powerful, a prequel to The Wizard of Oz that tells the story of the wizard's arrival in the Emerald City.  The actors will be James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams, and Abigail Spencer and its release is programmed for March 2013. It will be directed by Sam Raimi. I hope it will be very good and keeps much of the original characters and situations. We'll have to wait and see.

Lorito Books Squack Notes!

ALA Panel on Spanish Selection Informs and Surprises
Brodart Books sponsored a panel presentation on Spanish collections at the American Library Association conference.  Presenters included Nerissa Moran, Brodart's Manager of Spanish Collections & Acquisitions, Milly Lugo, Santa Ana Public Library Senior Librarian and Pam Fochtman, Lorito Books President.  The highly informative presentation touched on Hispanic demographics, online sources for bestseller lists and Spanish collection circulation statistics.  Surprisingly, one of the circulation statistics reported was that audiobooks have the highest turnover rate of all material types. A second surprise was that among the 50 million Hispanics living in the United States approximately 2/3 self-identify as Mexican origin, making Mexicans clearly the largest Hispanic group nationwide. Unlike previous immigrant groups in the U.S., young Hispanics report that their parents are more likely to encourage them to maintain their first language and speak Spanish in their homes.  (Source: 2010 US Census & Pew Hispanic Center.)  If you'd like a copy of the Brodart presentation contact pam@loritobooks.com.

Los elementos de una buena historia/ The elements of a good story

What are the elements of a good story? Among others, characters that you can identify with, a well written and well structured story that has, depending on its length, one or more arcs that lead the main character to learn something and to achieve, in most cases, his or her purpose. A good end is basic though it doesn't necessarily have to be a happy one. Of course there is a message... all stories have one (or several) but I feel that it should be so well written and incorporated (that means, not in your face) that it's not apparent so that, in this way, each reader will learn what he or she wants to since they are sufficiently inteligent to come to their own conclusions. Take any book and, after reading it to have fun, be delighted, or thrilled (and a big etcetera) with the story, study how the author did what he or she did. You can also do it with a book that you loathe in order to learn what not to do. And when you finish with that book, do it with another and another so that you learn from the masters ––and from those who are not–– because it's all valid. Read, read, and read because this is how you learn to write.

Vacaciones, excelente momento para leer/Vacations, an excellent moment for reading

Summer vacations are here and the kids are at home. After playing, watching TV, playing videogames, fighting with their siblings, and a big etcetera, they will most probably look for their parents and tell them, "I'm bored! I have nothing to do!" What an excellent moment to read them a book or to start reading a longer one with them. You can get the books from a library or a bookstore or borrow them from friends and family. Obviously, choose a book that will delight the family and the reader so that time goes by pleasantly. Leave the "classics" to one side for the moment and look for something contemporary by Mexican authors and illustrators such as Monique Zepeda, Felipe Ugalde, Elena Dreser, Rubí Juárez, Jaime Alfonso Sandoval, Fabricio Vanden Broeck, Gerardo Suzán, Natalia Gurovich, Karen Chacek, Alejandro Sandoval, Rosario Valderrama, Becky Rubinstein, M. B. Brozon, Toño Malpica, Ana Romero, Javier Malpica, Juan Carlos Quezadas, María Baranda, Norma Muñoz Ledo, Pancho Hinojosa, Ignacio Padilla, , among others, and, why not? mine too. Read with gusto, read with pleasure, read with passion, read to laugh, read to cry, read to get frightened, read to learn, read to dream. Your kids will be happy and, probably, will want to read on their own. Take advantage of the vacations and give them, and you, a gift that will last forever.

¿De dónde vienen las ideas?/ Where do ideas come from?

The other day I saw a program that featured the great Eric Carle, author and illustrator of classic books for kids like The Very Hungry Caterpillar and others adored by children around the world. I heard him say that he, like many others who are authors, are usually asked, "Where do ideas come from?" Of course, each one answers according to their experience but, for him, there are two sources: the first is from what is outside and the second from the heart. I liked his answer a lot. What do you think?

Sometimes I ask myself, with all the technology we have around us, if kids will have a close or “similar” relationship with books that I and others of my “transitional” generation have. It’s clear that, though many will have a close relationship with reading, the answer is, I believe, “no”.
It’s obvious that things have changed and there is no way to return to the past, which is not necessarily good or bad. Things are not black or white but rather there is an enormous variety of grays in between. Let me explain: I love paper books, since they are the ones I grew up with, but I have nothing against electronic books for many reasons. One of the things I love about paper books is, among other things, that you don’t need to connect them to a socket (really good if the lights go out) and you don’t need to press any buttons to use them. You don’t need an expensive machine to be able to read, nothing much happens if you drop it, and it’s specially good for relaxing before going to sleep (unless you’re reading something scary…). It is, for me, an unconditional friend. This doesn’t mean that I’m against e-books because I have an Ipad, I’m very happy with it, I can carry lots of books with me (especially great when you’re going on a long trip and don’t want to lug twenty books with you), and I know that there are tons of things for entertaining kids but, somehow, I don’t see me reading to my grandkids with something other than a paper book. Each thing has its place but I’m saddened to think that, in the near future, paper books will probably become objects of curiosity such as, nowadays, telephones with rotary dialers and Walkmans. I’m also saddened that bookshelves, today filled with books, will be… spaces for what? All that empty space for only a Kindle or a Nook? Porcelain figurines, souvenirs from an exotic trip, plants? I think that, as part of this generation caught between two, I will continue to love my paper books though I’ll read some on my Ipad. I’d just like to clear up that, for me reading in bed is not the same with the Ipad as with paper and, besides, I’m concerned that, if I fall asleep, it can fall. It can get damaged, something that will not usually happen with the paper book. Besides, in what refers to kids, the close experience of sitting with a little one on your lap and hugging him or her (as I did for many years with my sons), grabbing a book, reading it, turning the pages, observing the illustrations, and enjoying the moment is, for me, different and closer with a paper book than an electronic one. Besides, hugging an electronic book is not the same.

Cacareando el huevo/Tooting my own horn

Since they say that one must toot one’s own horn, I am very happy to announce that three of my books were preselected for the Mexican government’s reading program: Muyal, a Maya folktale illustrated by Monica Padilla and published by Editorial Progreso; De astutos, tragones y mordelones, with three Mexican folktales illustrated by Juan Gedovius and published by Editorial Norma; and ¡Vamos a comer…bichos!, about edible bugs from Mexico, with photos by my son Ilan Rabchinskey, illustrations by Margarita Sada, and published by Ediciones SM. All the good vibes sent my way last year did the trick and one of my books, Sapo y Yuku, a Yaqui story, was chosenfor the 2011-2012 school year so please send positive energy my way again. The final list of selected books will be released as of July 19 and I am hoping that at least one book is selected. And even if that doesn’t happen, I am still thrilled that the books are on the list since competition is very stiff.
(Perdón por repetir la noticia ya que ya apareció en Facebook./Sorry for repeating something that already came out in Facebook.)

Tips for reading with your baby/Tips para leer con tu bebé

It's never too early to read to your baby. As soon as your baby is born, he or she starts learning. Just by talking to, playing with, and caring for your baby every day, you help your baby develop language skills necessary to become a reader. By reading with your baby, you foster a love of books and reading right from the start.

Snuggle up with a book

When you hold your baby close and look at a book together, your baby will enjoy the snuggling and hearing your voice as well as the story. Feeling safe and secure with you while looking at a book builds your baby's confidence and love of reading.

Cambios y portadas de algunos de mis libros/Changes and covers of some of my books

I'm going to do a few important changes on my blog starting today and little by little. One of them will be to upload the covers of some of my books with a short description of them. Another will be to put, in separate columns, the Spanish and the English texts. While I figure out how to do this (because I don´t know how to at this moment but surely it's veeeeery easy) instructions geared to a six-year-old are gratefully accepted...

Dinos, fábulas, adivinanzas, perros y loros/Dinosaurs, fables, riddles, dogs, and parrots

What do they have in common? Well, as usual I’m involved in several projects at the same time and, though it’s hard, sometimes I have to change channels several times a day so that I can work on them at the same time. They say that women are good at multitasking and I think there is a certain truth to this because doing several things at the same time requieres maximum concentration on one theme without ignoring the rest. This is why I will now concentrate on reading a book about dinosaurs since this morning was dedicated to fables and riddles, I took out Becca, my dog, a couple of times (which helps me think better and resolve situations in my manuscripts), and now I’m going to bring in Lucas, my parrot, because he wants his supper and is making a scandal. After, the dog and I will be busy: she taking a nap and me reading about dinosaurs. It’s fun and reminds me of when my sons where dinosaur crazy. At home, and in order to feed their curiosity, we had several books about dinos but I don’t know where they are since my bookshelves are a disaster: full of rows and rows of books which doesn’t allow me to find what I need. Of course, one of my eternal projects is organizing my library but I’ve never been able to do it. I’ve been living in this house for thrity years and haven’t done it… and I doubt I ever will.

A few days ago I was told something that moved me to the bone. A while back I sent my grandkids a book published in Mexico with activities that can be done with paper and scissors and published, I believe, by Educal. I did it because my grandkids love to do things with their hands and, since the book is lovely, I was sure they would like it. My daughter-in-law works in a school in Israel and, since she doesn’t speak Spanish and my son hadn’t had time to tell her how to do some of the activities in the book, she lent it to a student, a10-year-old Colombian girl, thinking that she could read it and then explain what and how to do the activities so that she, in turn, could explain them to my grandkids. She told me that the child was timid, lost in her thoughts, and didn’t have any friends but that, when she saw the book her eyes shone and she asked for permission to take the book home for a week. She made some of the activities and took one or a few to school to show them to her teacher. Nobody in school knew that she had such talented hands. Her teacher was amazed and asked her to teach her classmates how to do them, which she did with enthusiasm. Her behaviour changed completely (it’s almost as if she’s now another child) and, besides, the other girls got closer to see what else she can do. Now she has friends! Isn’t it wonderful what a book made in Mexico can do for a child in another country? I continue to believe that books are magical.

Many years ago, I went to a workshop about reading and one of the activities was to write our reading autobiography. It was a great experience because I remembered things I thought I had forgotten.
My parents were and continue to be great readers and our house was always full of books. There were books in the bedrooms, in the living room, and in a small room which was the library, were there were shelves from the floor to the ceiling along two walls. I spent many hours in the library, surrounded by books of art, science, science fiction, novels, and short stories as well as comics, magazines, and books of esoteric themes, ghost stories (which I loved but also scared me at the same time) and many books for kids. One of my first memories is of my mother reading to me from a book of fairy tales (which I still have) and, later, of often going with my dad to the Librería Británica to buy books. Besides, the school where I went had wonderful libraries. The list of books I remember is long and I like to think about them. I do so fondly and I invite you to do it. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.

Año nuevo, proyectos nuevos/New Year, New Projects

I just got back from vacations. My husband and I were in Tabasco, Yucatan and Quintana Roo.  We went by car, had a great time and each time I'm more aware that I fall more in love with my country, its people, colors, food, folk art (words that do not do justice to the art produced in the whole country) and all its cultural richness, be it ancient or modern, that is found from one border to the other. I came back once again amazed by what the Maya did. I hope that someday I'll be able to go back to see more and I hope that someday all of you can travel through the country and enjoy it. I also brought back new folktales, something that thrills me.
